EXACTLY! The example I compare to Cotto all the time is Roy Jones when he jumped up to cherry pick Ruiz won a belt. Then talked a bunch on nonsense about fighting lewis or tyson but never did because he was smart and went back down. At least Jones didn't do what Cotto did and hold the belt hostage a year and half ducking GGG. When we look back at Cotto as a middleweight I view him the same as Roy as a Heavyweight.

That's just it, no one credible, no real boxing fan, thinks of it as "Roy Jones Heavyweight Career".

We think of it as Roy was so great he won a HWT title at one point during his career. Only the utter trolls and dip****s that permeate NSB would parse it like that FFS.

Canelo is an unnecessary step towards unification and a delay. He promised he'd fight him next, before the fight. After the fight he said he's ready to fight him. Now he's saying wait until September. I'm cool with that, give GGG his belt and they can meet in September. In the meanwhile GGG can continue his path towards unification #allthebelts

Actually fighting Canelo in the ring vs having him stripped preserves GGGs chance at the lineal title, which is equally important

If you only bought that fight because you thought they would fight GGG the next fight out then you are an idiot. Cotto refused to pay his fees and forced the hand to get stripped because he wanted no parts of GGG next or EVER and Canelo and his promoter NEVER said they would fight GGG their next fight only that they were going to fight him at some point. So where you getting this crap that you promised anything but 2 great fighters(Canelo/Cotto) fighting each other?

You know damn well GGG wants a mega fight more then he cares about the belt. Why is it so important for you to wrestle that out of GGG fans mouths? GGG wants all the belts but he clearly wants a mega fight that will take his career to another level a little more then he wants another belt. If he gets a contract to fight in Sept he gets the best of both worlds and doesn't have to choose.

In order for the WBC to approve the Cotto/Canelo fight both guys had to agree the winner fights GGG next. If they didn't agree to that GGG could've had Cotto stripped and if the WBC refused they would've been sued. Have you ever heard of Roccghiani? The WBC almost went out of business after he sued them and won. GGG has every right in the world to have Canelo stripped right now and he could sue GBP for breaching a verbal contract. That fight for the WBC MW belt couldn't have happened without GGG agreeing to allow them to fight with the promise of the winner fighting him next.

Just because he's been saying "unification" after every fight doesn't mean his only objective is unification and he'll take the shortest and dumbest way to get there. He stepped aside for Cotto in early 2015 with understanding that he preserves his mandatory slot for WBC belt.

Seriously, you can go back YEARS and you'll see him saying "I want unification, and if that's not possible, big PPV fights" for years. It's why he brought up Froch and Floyd.

I hate bringing up Ward because it usually starts a ridiculous GGG/Ward argument for the 287222432th time, but one of the reasons Golovkin wasn't that interested in Ward is because he didn't accomplish either unification or PPV mantra. Here's what he said in an interview back in March:

You sensitive bitter Cotto fans need to stop your crying. 2 facts that no matter the amount of crying and arguing won't change. 1. Cotto ducked GGG and 2. Cotto got whooped by Canelo. Get over it. Reason Cotto got murdered by fans for almost 2 years is because everybody including his fanbase knew he was never going to fight GGG. Was afraid to even mention his name in interviewers and had a deer in the headlights frighten moment when asked after the Geale fight. Canelo after his fight says I'll fight him and is actually negotiating to fight him next year. 2 things Cotto never did and if he won wasn't going to do that's why he refused to pay the fee.

Cotto is old news. This is about Canelo and GGG, you cotto fans need to take your tears elsewhere.

the moment k2 tries to force anything on canelo and makes it public, make no mistake canelo will show his middle finger to ggg and wbc, like he did to floyd and cotto in the past... that kid's ego is way to big for k2 or the wbc to handle it...

I'm a GGG fan. If they agree to fight on september 2016, I'm ok. Why? because GGG deserves a good payday, around 5 millions. If it's needed to wait a few more months I'm ok with that, as long as they fight at 160.

Once GGG gets the good payday he DESERVES (less skilled fighters have earned much more than what he's earned so far) I think he will eventually move up to 168 unless he still have good fights at 160.

So yeah, I'm ok with them fighting in september if it's ok for GGG. In the meantime he can fight Lee or Jacobs which are good fights too.

I'm going to laugh at GGG fans when he moves up to 168 without becoming undisputed champ. "But there was bigger fights for him at 168, everyone ducked him at 160, lets see if there's real men at 168!!"
