It's a damn good resume for someone his age that's for sure.

Canelo will certainly reach HOF status eventually, even if for nothing else but because they will want him to be..As young as he is, he's already closing in on 50 fights, but hardcore fans from the present, much like hardcore fans from the Chavez sr. era, will know that his great record was padded with nobodies or badly faded former big names, always cheated the scales, and controversy surrounded the tough fights..Still very respectable for demanding the fights we all thought he was afraid to take and he's Mexico's biggest star so he will definitly reach HOF, just with an asterik beside his name..

He's got a good resume for his age. He's not HOF status now, but i'm certain he will be in the future.

He's on his way. He has some decent names on his resume, but at the end of the day he hasn't accomplished much. His biggest accomplishment is beating Cotto and becoming the MW champ. What he does from here on out will be what makes him a first ballot HOF fighter, or second tier.

The Lara/Trout fights were disputable, as seen by the massive splits in scores across the sport:

                  For Trout/Canelo:

                  TOTAL: 194 SCORES.......TROUT 106..........CANELO 81........DRAW 7

                  PRESS: 45 SCORES...........TROUT 19............CANELO 23........DRAW 3
                  FANS: 149 SCORES...........TROUT 87............CANELO 58........DRAW 4

                  For Lara/Canelo:

Average Score From 89 Media Members:

                  ***114-114 DRAW***

34 Scored for Canelo – 39 per cent
30 Scored for Lara – 33 per cent
                  25 Scored a Draw – 28 per cent

I find it hard to justify counting Lara/Trout as 'wins' (or losses), just like others on his resume, when they are so clearly split - thats extremely unfair given Canelo was lucky to win those fights. Had Trout and Lara won those fights, which they could have easily gotten the decision, would this thread even exist?

Now i'm not saying we should disregard them, but I think they should be weighted fairly. Simply saying Canelo has wins over Trout/Lara does not reflect the fights at all, and therefore doesn't reflect Canelo as a fighter. Theres a ton of difference between Canelo having two decisive wins over Trout/Lara, and what he has now

No not borderline - if he retired today he would not get in. Longevity at an elite level is important. He has an impressive resume, the Cotto fight I think cemented his position as an elite fighter. I think there were some doubts based on his Lara and Trout performances, but against Cotto who is a good offensive/defensive fighter, he showed his class.

He now needs to show that class over a number of years and keep doing it against top level fighters and different styles, as he has been doing. He needs to improve as well because he has a habit of not excelling, we need to see him break down and stop a top fighter, break them down you know? I think that is missing, show stamina and a willing to push for the stoppage, really separate himself. You think of Cotto for example when he fought Judah, who was still a formidable fighter, lots of people were picking Judah before that fight, but Cotto did what you wanted to see him do, which was take the fight away from him and break him down, and show that he is a level above.

The good news is I think Canelo has enough competition around to prove these things. Lets see him against guys like Quillin, Lee, Jacobs, Lemieux, and most importantly GGG. Guys like Lee, Quillin, they are good fighters and dangerous but he should be shining in those fights.
