Because those counters hurt a little bit more than people think. They're not huge shots but if they had nothing on them then guys like Cotto, De La Hoya and Canelo would have just walked through him.
And they're super accurate and fast too. If everytime you're throwing, you're not landing and receiving a counter in the face you will start to hesitate to throw. Once you're not really throwing, then you can be backed up. And Floyd is a lot stronger than people realise i think, it's very rarely you ever see him outmuscled. I'm sure i saw an interview with Mosley where he said he was very surprised how strong Floyd was, much more than he realised from the outside.
