Why pay the fee when after he loses Cotto can just go back down to 154 and fight for the belt Mayweather just vacated?

The step aside was to fight Canelo next and not his mando... he's not getting it back.
canelo wanted the belt on the line, Cotto had to pay the step aside to make the fight. If he vacated it before, then it goes to GGG and there is no fight

Even if he wins, that's most likely his plan. He's basically indicated his intentions win, or lose.

I'm shocked at people mentioning that ggg keeps taking step aside money. Why wouldn't he? If the champ has no interest in fighting you, wouldn't you take the money to step aside from a fight that wouldn't be made anyway? I rather take the money than have a vacated belt.

Canelo is not going to face triplebumking any time soon.

“It’s no secret that me and Miguel are not 160 pounders,” Canelo said to the latimes.com about a potential fight against Golovkin. “Our body structures are not there yet. I would love to fight Triple G when the time comes, and I’m willing and able to do it. When the time comes, I’m more than willing,” Canelo said.

          1. He's not fighting GGG
          2. Why pay the sanctioning fee when he will be stripped after anyways.

The surprising thing is Canelo wanting to fight for the title when he says he's not a middleweight and has no plans on moving up.

2- those fans who were planning to buy the fight yesterday will still buy it on Saturday, this fight for better or for worse is bigger than the title.
Canelito is not fighting bumloveking. He is ducking, ducking, and ducking....he is going to fight Pac next lmao!!!!

Caneliot is not a MW, you know.....

As long as Canelo doesn't weigh in over 160 he will still be champ if he wins. If Canelo comes in over 160, then GGG will be upgraded to full champ.

His "body structure" doesn't allow him to come at 160 on the scales.

Who cares, all the belts have always had an asterisk above them unless you held a few of them but in the last 5 years or so with the interim, silver, etc. and ridiculous stipulations they've become even more meaningless.
