Cotto is a long way from being top P4P now - maybe top 40 as of this moment.

I get shocked when people say Canelo will easily win this fight, under what reasoning?
Yes don't get me wrong, Cotto's MW run is smoke and mirrors but even at that the guys he lost too would have probably and in some cases also beat Canelo, Trout being the exception but even then that decision could have gone either way. Cotto was also far more competitive than Canelo against Mayweather.
Canelo is not elite and has not decisively beaten an elite fighter, his resume is smoke and mirrors too.... a lot of washed up names on there with questionable wins over the ones that weren't faded.
The way I see it is the fight will be close decision, This sort of matchup often favours the young up n comer which is why my heart says Canelo but my boxing brain say's Cotto's better boxing and work rate can win the day.

Damn Triple G retired Cotto without fighting him just like Pacquiao did to Floyd once upon a time..

Canelo has beaten tough opponents on his way to the top. Lara, Angulo, Trout, Kirkland and fought Mayweather. Now you may argue some of those names were tailor made for him, but they are top tier fighters at the time in the division.
Trout beat Cotto, and Lara is a fighter everyone is avoiding with a 10 ft pole. Canelo deserves to be here, and will have the advantage of speed, strength, and youth.
In my experience, when a fighter starts talking about retirement before one of his biggest fights, it never ends well. I think Cotto sees the writing on the wall, not the right state of mind to be in against a young lion like Canelo.

It would be a shame if Cotto were to beat Canelo, and then people started diminishing that achievement by saying that Canelo just isn't as good as people thought.

That's a lot of money and he is an aging fighter. Good time to hang them up after one more fight after Canelo.
There isn't really too much else for him to do.
IF he beats Canelo he won't fight Golovkin. Even if it means vacating. At this point I don't think the 160 title means that much to him.
A think a good possibility (possibly even irrespective of Canelo result) might be Bradley, unless Tim gets a third shot at Pacquiao.
A bad loss to Canelo might see retirement. Either way 1-2 more fights max.

He's been very very carefully matched in the past few years and has fallen short against top fighters, and even just good fighters like Trout. I still think Cotto has something left but i think his best days are long gone.
In my opinion, i don't think Canelo or Cotto right now are great fighters. They are very good but i don't believe the hype that this is a super fight between elite fighters. I think Cotto is still a good fighter looking for some big pay days before retiring and Canelo is not in that elite bracket that his fame would suggest. Has struggled with the 3 best fighters he's been in with at the time of fighting them which is Floyd, Lara and Trout and could easily have 2 or 3 losses on his record from those fights.
That's why it's a good matchup. It's a very good competitive fight but at a lower level than the marketing for the fight suggests.

It's kind of sad when you look at some of the fighters close to retiring. The end of a generation of real solid fighters.
Personally, i want to see Cotto face GGG if he gets past Canelo. I think GGG has earned his big fight.
But whatever he does, it's up to him. He has faced a lot of top fighters down the years and i can understand why he's going to go out on his terms.
If he beats Canelo, GGG is the one people will be looking at. I'm sure also, that Cotto will have one eye on a possible Mayweather return.
If none of those 2..it makes you wonder who could be a farewell fight.
If he looses, he may consider an earlier than planned retirement, although i'm sure he will want to go out with a win at the Garden. Maybe someone like Bradley?
Before all that though, he's got a tough fight coming up to focus on.

We'll see. If that's what you believe and If Canelo wrecks him, don't come back on here saying Cotto is old and shot as an excuse.
