You don't take a tuneup against a top fighter. That defeats the purpose of calling it a tuneup.
How is Kovalev taking a tuneup when he's an active fighter? In any case, his next opponent is a guy that he knocked out 2 fights ago lol. There's nothing to do at LHW, and fighting a guy that you dominated less than a year ago shows that.
Kovalev also isn't talking trash to make himself feel safe. He knows Ward is the real deal, and will prepare properly for him, not that it will matter.

And Ward last fought 11-16-2013, against #6 SMW Edwin Rodriguez. After a 20 month layoff, he took a tuneup against Paul Smith, not 3. Don't tell outright lies when the truth only takes 30 seconds to Google dude.Comment

Of the choices available this seemed like the pick to make, but once again the bottom line with a Andre Ward fight is no one really gives a f#ck. Big fan of his boxing talent, but come the f#ck on with these silly who gives a f#ck fights. Although I guess more power to anyone who can hustle HBO to show your bs fights doe.
