Cotto is one of the most well-known fighters in the sport, you're talking about him as if he was some nobody that Martinez deigned to fight. In reality Martinez was desperate for the big names to fight him. He spent years begging for Chavez Jr to take him on. Yes Martinez cared about his middleweight champion status, but don't stand here pretending he was taking on the toughest around for free. Like anyone else, he wanted big names to get big paychecks.
BTW I don't remember anyone asking Martinez to move up and fight Ward instead of waiting for Chavez or Cotto. They would have been laughed at.

Could he have made the same fighting Golovkin? Maybe... but Golovkin was the riskier fight.

With GGG yeah he could have I believe at the time Cotto was on his radar same with GGG Cotto was on his radar as well ..It really was more about timing with these guys .

The fact is Ward is calling out Golovkin to get his own name back out there, just like Martinez did with Chavez and Cotto. But Ward isn't going to make the concessions Martinez did to fight Golovkin. He wants a 50/50 split, at 168. Golovkin does not need Ward to make a big purse, he can headline his own PPVs at middleweight, where there's another very lucrative fight awaiting him (the Cotto-Canelo winner).
Don't pay attention to what the people on this forum are saying about fighters. If people on NSB reflected public opinion, Rigondeaux would be making Mayweather purses. Instead pay attention to what your friends and relatives are saying. My mom has heard of "Triple G," my friends have heard of him. Nobody has heard of Ward, or if they have they know him as that guy who won a tournament in 2012.
