Do boxers OWE US their LIVES?

I was just having this conversation minutes ago because of the Matthysse fight.

Here's the argument, they win millions BUT what they give us in exchange is their life in the ring. (THATS ONE OF THE TEMPTATIONS this world offers.. money for your*fill in blank*) We make them rich. Fight for blood and entertainment BUT the reward is pretty good. We fans don't get the millions but we get our violent fix/entertainment.

    What do you think?

I think if they WANT TO MAKE millions getting into boxing they OWE US to FIGHT like warriors risking everything. In EXCHANGE, they can make MILLIONS. They risk their health and life but that's the price they have to pay to make that amount.

WE pretty much maintain them by supporting them so they do owe us IMO.

Here's the thing, while I do think that a boxer should give their best efforts in the ring, sometimes you have to know how to draw the line. Not every boxer makes millions, those are only the top names in the sport. If a boxer is in a tough fight, and gets a swollen eye,a busted lip,or some kind of a cut, they need to suck it up and keep fighting. On the other hand,if its a career threatening injury (really deep cut, fractured orbital bone) they themselves shouldn't quit, but their corner or the ref should do their jobs and make sure that the fighter can see another day in the ring.

You need a boxer with balls for that idea to work. It already takes balls to step in the ring, let alone fight in an offense-heavy style. Fighting the way you're taking about takes a lot of heart.

Also, boxing techniques are getting better, specifically defense. The only way you can get those type of wars is by matchmaking. I rather watch lesser skilled fighters who have a lot of heart and are willing to put it all on the line than watch the best boxers in the world, usually because they're defensive specialists and know how to spoil the action, i.e. Rigondueax, Ward, Mayweather.

No, just the ones that charge $100 for a PPV and have the nerve to call it the fight of the century.

Do you know what happens when two boxers like Fernando Vargas and Felix Trinidad fight each other?

                Both were undefeated.

                Both were champions.

Both were offensive and had high knockout ratios.

Both were aware of each other long before the contracts were signed.

                Vargas was 20-0 (18 KO's)

                Tito was 38-0 (31 KO's)

                It was a legendary fight.

But neither boxer was ever the same afterward.

Vargas went 6-4 (3 losses by KO) after the Trinidad fight before retiring in 2007.

And Trinidad went 3-3 (1 loss by KO). He retired in 2008.

You got a great fight, but at the cost of two careers.

As fans we have the right the expect something from them however they owe us nothing. They fight for the welfare of themselves and their family. And although we pay for them to make money; they have to live with the consequences of the sport and they are in control. They OWE us nothing.

Not their lives, but if you want the respect of people (along with money), you're going to have to do things to earn it. Like put up a good fight or at least fight the best.
