    Both were champions.

Both were offensive and had high knockout ratios.

Both were aware of each other long before the contracts were signed.

    Vargas was 20-0 (18 KO's)

    Tito was 38-0 (31 KO's)

    It was a legendary fight.

But neither boxer was ever the same afterward.

Vargas went 6-4 (3 losses by KO) after the Trinidad fight before retiring in 2007.

And Trinidad went 3-3 (1 loss by KO). He retired in 2008.

You got a great fight, but at the cost of two careers.

So should all fighters start engaging less and fight more defensively? No thanks, I want action. Vargas and Trinidad were loved for their styles.

If you want to pick a sport where the participants owe the fans a greater disply of heart...start with soccer.

No I wouldn't put it that way. As long as fighters fight top notch fighters I'm cool.

Living to fight another day is nothing to be ashamed of. Guys like Mattysee, Cotto, and Vitali took all they could handle. Atleast they had the heart to get in the ring.

Now fights that make accuses to make fighter are the true cowards of boxing. Guys like Mayweather, Quillin, and Chavez Jr are the worst. Always making excuses not to fight and always looking for ways to get over their opponents.

Ask the sicko guy and he'll say, "No."

Solid post. That fight was a thrill to watch. I was rooting for Vargas but Tito damaged him in a war. He was never the same. War Vargas!

No one should owe anyone else their very life. That whole idea is repulsive. A boxer is still a human being with, in many cases, a family to support. Many boxers also do not go into the sport out of choice but due to necessity. Plus they risk their lives every time they step in the ring.

At the end of the day, if a boxer loses or quits their cache goes down anyway so it's not like they continue to make huge amounts of money by being risk averse.

WE pretty much maintain them by supporting them so they do owe us IMO.
Have you already forgotten the case of Mago? That was a fighter who gave his all in the ring and ended up permanently brain damaged, his family facing huge medical bills (which I doubt you contributed any money towards). If you're happy to see something like that happen again then there's something wrong with you. Seriously.

No, but you should entertain. If you're not willing to endure the challenges that boxing presents, then choose another career. Boxers don't pay themselves through a self-sustaining economy, if that was the case then they can do what they want. That's not the case, so they need to make themselves valuable in the entertainment business by entertaining.

No they don't owe us anything really. But a boxer is expected to be much braver and tougher than the average guy because they are paid to fight and sometimes paid millions to fight. If they show a lack of courage in a boxing match it could cost them fans and as a result cost them some of the money they will be paid in future fights. How much is Ortiz paid to fight these days?
