James DeGale has played down talk of a rematch with George Groves, saying he is only interested in taking on 'elite' fighters.

The only blemish on DeGale's record (21-1 KO14) is a defeat at the hands of Groves back in 2011 when his British rival took the domestic and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles at the O2 Arena.

Ward needs to take this fight, although I got no problem with another tuneup at 170 first if he is serious about making 168 and if the weight really is that much of a problem.

Otherwise, Degale/Jack and Ward can move to 175 and get in a couple of fights before Kovalev, seeing that Kovalev currently has a full schedule.

Ward is fighting on the Canelo undercard and DeGale has a fight the following week against Bute in Canada. Surely you know this?

I think both fighters will want the fight but the issue is now going to be the management teams as DeGale is with Haymon and Ward is with Roc Nation.

Has anyone heard anything more about that yet ?

Ward needs to decide on a division before he does anything else.

The weight announced for his next fight will confirm that.

If 170 or under, then he is obviously staying at SMW..... if 172 or above, then he has obviously move to LHW.

I agree with you regarding the eye test.

But there is so much more to boxing at an elite level.

What we do know about each fighter is this.....

* Ward has proven himself against a number of top guys who fight using a range of different styles

* Degale is yet to solve the Groves puzzle

Inactivity doesn't change the fact that Ward is one of the most well-rounded fighters in the game today, and his RingIQ is superb.

Even if that fight was held in Degales back yard (I guess I am kinda leaving myself open for a good ol Oakland back-hander here) Ward would still be a significant betting favorite imo.
