He's talking about from the southpaw stance, I believe. The coach probably said so because lefties usually don't have good right hooks. I have a robust right hook, however.

Right hook to the body is fine.

Right hook upstairs is whole different story. It's just a weird punch.

Not many guys can generate a lot of power with it. You have to be really close to throw it. If you don't know how to throw it very tight, you leave yourself pretty open, and it's a pretty easy punch to see.

It's also a hard punch to recover from if you miss.

My first coach never even taught me the right hook to the head, flat out said, you don't need it.

I thought only a lefty can throw a right hook and a righty throws a right cross like the one Marciano threw against Walcott to win title

If I recall correctly Floyd put in a few good right hooks to the body on Berto. Set him up with jab up or down to expose the lower rib cage/torso and slams it in there.

Tyson has an almost infamous right hook to the body, right uppercut to the head combination.

The right hook is generally thrown to the body and comes in wide since its coming from the power hand. The left hook is good because your left hand is already stationed to either attack/defend close to the opponent.

Trainers right bro, never under any circumstances throw a right hook. People have died doing that sh.t.

While your at it, don't throws lefts either or punches in general, just nudge people gently with your face. Maybe a kick if you feel up to it, those are the only true punches.

It's a proper punch and a great powerful punch. Any coach who tells his fighter not to throw a right hook is taking away a valuable weapon. It's a punch Hopkins uses often so that should be good enough for anybody. Southpaws can use a left hook equally as well. Who can forget the monster left hook Pacquiao flattened Hatton with.
