Will Floyd Mayweather be considered Number 1?

If he retires undefeated and beats Margarito and Hatton, and gets another title in the light middleweight division. will he be considered one of the best fighters? would you put him near muhammad ali, sugay ray robinson, etc.

    Discuss please.........thanks

hah, if he just even beats Hatton he will be...in some ways many will remember him along those lines anyway...

but definitely with Hatton on his resume...

      Not in my book.

You have to overcome adversity as a fighter to be considered an all time great. That's just my opinion.

Adversity in this case...you need to lose a major fight against a major fighter...and then rematch and beat him.

yes. I have stated this in a bunch of threads.

I will consider him an all time great if he beats the top competition at 140-147 (which he started doing with judah, but I am mostly interested in hatton, then margarito and cotto, I think)

All Mayweather has to do now is fight Ricky Hatton, Hatton is at his prime right now and so is Mayweather. Allow oscar delhoya, Mayweather should go for Hatton!!! If he beats Hatton, he will go down as one of the greatest ever!

                Yes.

Fact remains he didin't lose the fight because there is a "w" on his record. And the case could be made for that being a major fight....but I don't know exactly how big in magnitude it really was if you were going to rank it on a scale of major fights.

Either way if Oscar beats Mayorga decisevly.....Floyd and Oscar need that superfight. See what I'm getting at?

You are right. Castillo-Floyd was not that big.

You are also right in floyd-hoya being a BIG fight.

but to be honest, I am not that interested in watching it, I think Oscar is past it, I'd be surprised if the hoya of old (quartey round 12?) shows up ever again. He had stamina problems in the later rounds in the past, can you imagine at 33 after a 20 months layoff? He is not a master at conserving energy like toney, his footwork is beautiful but he always used it too much.

If Floyd fights De La Hoya, Hatton, and Margarito and beats them all, I will consider him one of the three greatest fighters that ever lived.
