Comments Thread For: Cortez: Cotto-Canelo Winner is Mayweather's Successor

Retired referee Joe Cortez, who is now an expert analyst for ESPN and other outlets, say the winner of November's fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Miguel Cotto will establish the successor to the recently retired Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Last Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Mayweather announced his retirement following a twelve round decision over Andre Berto.

Cotto-Canelo also takes place in Last Vegas, but at the MGM's sister venue over at the Mandalay Bay. The event is set for November 21.

I don't really know if that is true. Floyd beat them both. Canelo still young, Cotto at the tail end of his career.

"So, I think Cotto will retire in two years, but he will have six more fights before that."

I doubt he fights that many more times

6 more fights is a lot. If he loses to Canelo, by KO, where does he go from there? Retirement!

I agree. I think whoever wins will hold the cards in terms of being the A side against basically everyone from 140-160. Even against Pacquiao who is at the tail end of his career. If Cotto win he solidifies his career even more and proves he is a new men with Fredie in his corner. If he wins like i expect him to win(dominating fashion) he will be the hotest thing in boxing and any fight he does from now on will be PPV. If Canelo wins he becomes a superstar and basically all his fights become ppv from here on.

I think whoever wins even if it is for a short time will be the cash cow in boxing.

Cotto has never even been in the top 3 P4P before and hes supposed to be Mayweathers successor if he beats the good but limited Canelo?
Guess people forget the beatings he took from Pacquiao and Magarito and even Trout.

So whoever wins, will now be the new "A" side? Allowing them to cherry pick the "B" side opponents!
