Because in 2012 and 2013, Roman Gonzalez was not in the top 10 P4P rankings. Flash forward to 2014 and 2015, he made it to the #1 P4P spot. What happened with Roman Gonzalez going to the #1 P4P spot looks like he was given a Wormhole by the media to basically skip traveling through space and just get to the destination they want him in. That is very su****ious. It's what makes me feel like this is a push, rather a genuine climb up the P4P ladder. Like he was hooked up with a free ticket by the media because he gets KO's. Like they want him to be the next fighter to get international superstardom. He was chosen, he did not fight elites or great fighters to earn his spot.
The Yaegashi win in 2014 is the only win, if you look back and try to research to see what got him his sudden #2/#1 spot. The Yaegashi win is the only win you can think of that catapulted him from non top 10 P4P ranking to #1 P4P, which makes no sense. This nonsensical media push is not fair to a fighter like Kovalev. He is out here fighting former Ring champions and next probably fighting the current LHW champ if Haymon/Duva can work something out.
In the past, guys who made it to #1, like Mayweather and Pacquiao, had already been in the top 10 P4P rankings for years upon years. Before Floyd made it to #1 on the list in 2005, he had already been there steadily climbing since 1998 where he was #8, that's 7 years. Before Pacquiao became #1 on the P4P list, he was there since 2003 when he beat Barrera, and finally got #1 in 2008, after 5 years of being a top 10 P4P fighter.
Gonzalez became #1 after not even 2 years, with no wins to indicate such a big jump from nothing to #2.
