Ward needs the Golovkin fight badly. A smaller more popular opponent he can rough house around and get some shine off of.
If he were to fight another Smith level opponent next and then move up and get slept by Kovalev after he will be irrelevant.
Ward - GGG 70/30

Super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15KOs) says the fans were hoodwinked by Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) and his team, promoter Tom Loeffler and trainer Abel Sanchez.

A few weeks ago, Loeffler denied that there were ever negotiations for a possible fight between the two sides. Ward claims a formal 50-50 offer was made, and he has proof by way of email, and says the offer was rejected in five minutes and he was told that 'maybe in 2017' the fight can happen.
