Good stuff here and some tough facts, but i guess the Puerto Ricans have nobody to root for and are so desperate so they worship the diva until retirment, which is hopefully soon. Would be so hilarious if Canelo crushes him like a g****.

Great thread, and made a lot of points with factual statements to reinforce them.

Cotto is a good fighter and has a good resume, but he seems to get a lot of credit for the losses on his record as well. Fighting top names and beating them is one thing, but getting paid astronomic amounts to lose is a victory in its own right, but a loss on his record Nonetheless.

Imagine if Mayorga was overrated for having simply faced all the good names he lost to throughout his career, granted, he's not nearly as talented as Cotto, but still.

At the end of the day Cotto has a solid resume, not great but good enough.

Vacant WBA vs Carlos quintana @ 147

foreman for the WBA @ 154

And the wbc 160 was Martinez @ catch weight

Miguel Cotto fights everyone. A warrior who fought everyone.

                Really?

Miguel Cotto has had one of the most "PROMOTER CREATED" careers in boxing.

Top Rank matchmakers had to work overtime to get him his belts.

His 1st 3 belts were all vacant titles.

He won the vacant WBO 140 belt fighting Kelson Pinto.
He won the vacant WBC 147 belt fighting Carlos Quintana.
He won the vacant WBO 147 belt fighting Michael Jennings.
The 1st time he won a belt from a "CHAMPION" was cherrypicking Yuri Foreman.

Cotto never tried to unify and fight another "CHAMPION".

People thought Cotto was fighting everyone because he fought Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito 2007-2008.

Judah hadn't won in 2 years when Cotto fought him. Winless in his 3 previous fights.

Mosley was 36 yrs. old and people thought he was washed up after going 1W-4L-1NC 2002-2004.

Margarito had just lost the previous year to Paul Williams and let's be honest Cotto and handlers thought Margarito was too slow and unskilled.

Not trying to compare Cotto with Trinidad, Gomez, or Benitez... but let's be fair. When you're out to discredit a fighter, you'll twist the facts to make your case.

First let's address your "vacant" championship versus an incumbent champion. So what? Was the belt raffled off or something? Or did he still have to defeat another fighter to get the belt?

Now about your dismissal of some of his opponents. Yes... Mosley was 36 years old when he lost to Cotto in what was a brilliant fight for Cotto. Yet he still had enough in the tank to KO Mayorga a year later, and KTFO Margarito a few months after that.

Zab Judah on a losing streak? So what? Three years after losing to Cotto (in another brilliant fight).... here was the same Judah earning a victory over the previously undefeated Lucas Matthysse. Not bad, huh?

I invite you to take an objective view of Cotto's entire resume. I'll gladly stack it up against any contemporary fighter... one by one. Cotto fought more than his share of the difficult and dangerous boxers and defeated them all. Ricardo Torres, Randall Bailey... hell... he took out the previously undefeated Carlos Quintana who.... easy enough now to dismiss him to make the case against Cotto. But the same Quintana who 2 years later got a UD over Paul Williams.

BTW.... as a bit of info.... Cotto would've absolutely destroyed Ricky Hatton had they met back in the day. I'm only sorry they never got the chance to meet.

It's not a fact that can be proven but I believe Cotto was a better fighter than Hatton and would have defeated Hatton at 140 pounds. Cotto is very good but I agree he comes up short compared to the other Puerto Rican greats, especially Trinidad who had 15 successful welterweight title defenses and won all his first 40 fights at 147 and 154. What you wrote is factually accurate.

Your full of *****...Cotto fought in the 2000 Olympics.....Kostya Tszyu fought in a different era and he would've put Ricky Fatton in his back pocket..

kostya was ring/lineal and ibf 140 champ til 2005. he was stripped of his wbc, wba belts 2003 outside of the ring. he was the man at 140 during cotto's 140 career.
