Because Cotto can, as winning the middleweight belt put him in the history books in his native country, while also upping the purses for his fights.

Cotto's not beholden to the WBC belt, but the trinket carries monetary value to he and his team.

Like its only a catchweight if one fighter is coming down in weight.

Correct me if im wrong but only heavyweight has a minimum weight limit. Any other class then anyone can fight as long as you dont go over.

Eg. Rigo vs kovalev for the LHW title could be made. The can both weigh anything upto 175.
        Exactly what I've been saying

It's frustrating for ggg, he just can't get a big name to fight him

The David Lemieux fight is decent but we all know David is fragile and won't be able to take it - early stoppage for ggg.... It's going to be a test of his star power this being on pay per view....

If he does well the winner of canelo vs cotto may fight him.... After all money talks...

I thought k2 said there would be no fight unless they paid ggg step aside money and guaranteed to fight him next. There has been nothing reported to my knowledge....

I'm sure roach has told cotto to avoid ggg at all costs....

I just see the same cotto he has had weight drained opponents and the Martinez fight was a mirage

Canelo stops cotto or beats him by a wide decision - don't get me wrong roach will have the game plan but I'm sure the younger bigger and fresher guy who is equal in skill level usually wins against the guy who has had loads of wars and is surely under sized for this weight

It tarnishes Cotto more than Canelo, since Canelo wanted 156 and MW champ insisted on 155. Canelo is not exempt either, both his title shots at a CW, but at least this is not Matt Hatton. Good fight otherwise, just shouldn't have winner #1 at 160

Well.. the winner wonŽt be #1 at 160. This is for money and bragging rights. IŽd call this an eliminator, but Cotto will never fight GGG. Perhaps WBC should just fabricate a 155 paper belt?

Well... Canelo is over 170 lb in the fight night -- in case he wins he can say he's #1 at 160... And that he will fight GGG sometime later.
... Cotto-Canelo winner may vacate the WBC belt, but not the Ring belt though...

Canelo can't make 154 without hurting himself. He didnt miss weight vs Angulo for no reason. And he didn't even attempt to lose the weight. He just paid Angulo off.

Diva Cotto is making a mockery of the WBC middleweight belt. Freely admits he's not a middleweight and not willing to fight middleweights unless there shot or weight drained. Hope the WBC step in and strip him if he wins against Alvared and then makes diva demands with weight against GGG.
