Comments Thread For: Berto: I'm Surprised at Criticism Over Mayweather Shot

Former WBC/IBF welterweight champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23KOs) is surprised with the heavy criticism over being selected as the final career opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs) on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Fans were expecting either Amir Khan or Keith Thurman, but Berto was largely unexpected. Although Mayweather mentioned him as a frontrunner in June, the statement was widely assumed as a mirage to disguise the name of the actual opponent.

Berto is a nice kid. If he hadn't already received been grossly overpaid for a ton of mis-matches on HBO already when he was being pushed as a prospect, I might even have been happy for him to get a payday.

The outrage is understandable but it shouldn't be directed towards Berto.

Mayweather/Pacquiao vs Berto were two of my favorite matches in boxing back several years ago. Neither of the two capitalized on the young undefeated Berto where a win would have been meaningful because he was an undefeated champion, that always looks good on a resume, taking a champions 0. Pacquiao, if I remember correctly, Arum said he offered Marquez, Mosley and Berto to Pacquiao and he picked Mosley. Then Berto vs Ortiz was signed and both fights happened a month apart. That could have been Pacquiao's win right there, he would have gotten a lot of credit for that win, instead Ortiz got it. Pac would have KO'ed him.

These match-ups (Upper tier vs lower tier) occur all the time.

            Manny vs Algeri
            Thurman vs Collazo
            Khan vs Collazo
            DSG vs Paulie
            Wilder vs Molina
            Wlad vs Jennings
            GGG vs Monroe

Floyd vs Berto is no different, other than Floyd being involved. If Floyd was 50, he would still be expected to fight the very best young talent. Which BTW, when was the last time Floyd fought an OLDER opponent?

Its just the hate spewing over.

it would'nt have made a difference of who floyd have chosen. the jealous and hate still would've been there. don't worry berto. your nice payday is more than the jealous haters can make.

The shoulder roll vs the chicken wing. Who do you vote for?

Berto is a good guy, and the hate shouldn't be directed toward him at all. No one is questioning the effort he puts forward. He's gone through hell and fought through a lot. That doesn't change the fact that this is a blatant cherry pick, and he's just not an elite fighter.
