That no name was his mandatory opponent, which he had to fight, or he loses his belt. As for the hbo contract, its legal and binding,so he can't just go fighting on any network because he feels like it. On the other hand Stevenson and Artur don't have any contracts with networks,so what's their excuse for not fighting on hbo for a 50-50 split?

Or you could just fight kovalev directly for 3 belts, instead of having to go the extra step and have to set yourself up as the mandatory for only one of his belts...oh that's right, big daddy haymon said no to the fight because he'd rather go to a purse big and throw a ton of investor money at the fight.
HBO is going to pay some money for the US broadcasting rights, the live gate in Russia (for two returning Russian fighters) is likely to generate some money, there's now talk of Russian TV ponying up money for the fight, and then you have the BoxNation (UK) and other EU broadcasters likely considering picking up the fight; $500k as the share to Beterbiev off of the rest of the money is laughable. Boxing, at the world level, is bigger than "i want to fight the guy from down the block, so let's fight"; if the business isn't squared away, its not worth the time.Comment

Duva tried to be funny with the money, so Team Beterbiev had no real urgency to take on Kovalev now, understanding that they'll still end up with the mandated title shot and a war chest, if Main Events tries to screw around with the second round of talks (Canadian fighter only getting 25% of the Canadian PPV money is silly). lol

You know, its kinda pathetic that haymons fighters have to rely on purse bids in order to get belts. Both Stevenson and Artur would get crushed by kovalev,so the only way that they could get his belts is by forcing a purse bid,and making him vacate. But I guess you'd rather see a fighter get a belt via purse bid, rather than take if from the champ,as long as its an haymon fighter getting the belt.Comment

Kovalev is supposed to be one of the "stars of HBO Boxing", yet fought his last fight for $750k. The same network, mind you, that is paying Golovkin near twice that for softer fights and paying Canelo and Cotto 3 and 4 times that for their own fights.
The only reason that Kovalev is being shorted on his money, imo, is because Main Events has chosen to willfully take money out of Kovalev's pocket as the price for having their promotional company placed on the main stage, with Top Rank/Golden Boy/etc.
If Kovalev is as good as you believe him to be, why does Duva refuse to put up the money to back her fighter? Even if they'd lose money on this one show, Kovalev being as good as hyped would allow him to end the situation as the undisputed/unified light heavyweight champion of the world!
Take all of the belts back to HBO, and now HBO would have to actually pay up for Kovalev.Comment

Why are some people upset that the fight won't happen next? If Artur were to lose you guys would burn him alive. Nobody is going to give him credit for fighting the most dangerous fighter in boxing at the moment. Most will say Artur is a hype job and "oh he was stepped up to soon."
Nobody is going to be like, "Yeah, he fought Kovalev in his tenth pro bout." Even if it ends up being a close fight.
Look at how people treat Lomachenko. Nobody praises him for fighting Salido in his second pro fight. The fight was close and people act like Salido beat the crap out of him. That's the fight they will always use against him.
So good for Artur and his team!! They feel like they need more experience. They don't have to listen to the haters. Probably Haymon haters or something.
A Chilemba fight would be solid. I doubt it happens though. But who knows maybe ME are confident in Chilemba and will use him to try and conquer the two Haymon fighters (Adonis and Artur).Comment
