Don't have a problem with him picking Cotto over Golovkin, but he could have fought GGG before Cotto. GGG was the champ since 2010 and was a top 10 MW by everyone (a lot had him top 5 too). After the Paul Williams win and before the Chavez fight, he fought Sergiy Dzinziruk (154 WBO champ but this was his first 160 fight), Darren Barker (who they said was like 8th on the depth chart) and Matthew Macklin (who was off a Sturm loss) instead of GGG.
Sergio Martinez-How would you rate his career?

I don't recall this fight being seriously considered till GGG beat Proska.Don't have a problem with him picking Cotto over Golovkin, but he could have fought GGG before Cotto. GGG was the champ since 2010 and was a top 10 MW by everyone (a lot had him top 5 too). After the Paul Williams win and before the Chavez fight, he fought Sergiy Dzinziruk (154 WBO champ but this was his first 160 fight), Darren Barker (who they said was like 8th on the depth chart) and Matthew Macklin (who was off a Sturm loss) instead of GGG.Comment

I agree with this.He was lineal champ but was never able to land that big name fight to pay for his retirement. That's why I have no issue with him picking Cotto over Golovkin.
A fight between the Martinez that fought Murray and Cotto vs GGG would have been terrible to watch in hindsight.Comment

It didn't pick up till his US debut but he was ranked much better than the other guys he fought before Chavez (none of whom were tested in the US market anyway). GGG was the WBA champ at the time so there would have been some interest, especially when Dibella admitted that Barker wasn't a guy they were even looking to fight (weird they'd go to Barker but not GGG, who was the champ).
He could have also fought him after the Chavez win but fought Murray instead. I guess it was one of those situations where he was too dangerous with not enough money so it wasn't worth it for Martinez.Comment

I rate it very high, for me he was one of the most entertaining champions in the ring, he brought it in every single fight, because he was always fighting against odds, his fights against Williams and Dzinziruk are memorable, he is a role model and his life story is a legend.
I'll always remember him.Comment

a few years down the road he'll be remembered for the brutal knockout of williams and that's about it. his only other good wins were pavlik and...hmm. i' don't really rank pavlik too high. his only good wins were the taylor fights.Comment

and that is why he was one of the most entertaining boxers, he was fighting against bigger stronger opponents, but never knocked out.Comment

Maravilla was one of my favorite boxers, not afraid of anyone. I think he would/could have beaten GGG a few years ago but just before the Chavez fight, it looked like he was starting to slip a bit due to injuries but the guy that beat Pavlik would have done a number on GGG imo.It seems Maravilla is done and that's to bad, i really thought he would of pulled the upset over GGG if he was in his usual form before he hurt his knee in the Chavez jr fight. I'd pick him in his prime to beat all @ 154-160 right now He produced spectacular fights IMO............I miss him already............
Do you consider him a ATG? HOF? Or just a good fighter?
BTW
Against May@154
Against GGG@160
Against Ward@168
Would of been my dream fights, do you think he could of pulled any of them off in his prime?
I'd say he is a HOF talent, especially when you consider the age that he started boxing and the boxers that he beat.Comment

Huh? Getting constantly knocked down against average fighters does not show you are exciting or that you are hard to KO. Do you realize how many small fighters never been knocked down, or hardly ever knocked down against bigger fighters? Martinez was chinny, not that he was fighting massive punchers who had a great size advantage over him.Comment
