I understand they were off-balance KDs, but that still means he was getting hit with punches during those KDs (albeit not as strong). But if GGG ends up hitting him, that's going to be a good punch compared to Macklin or Murray or whoever's punches. That's points that could easily sway a decision.

And that's another issue. If Martinez gets his flush from GGG and still decides to attack, well he's going to suffer a few more KDs or could get KOed.

Yea but you still gotta give him credit for saying he wants the fight and probably had intentions if he were to win against Cotto.

Very good career and a sure Hall of Famer but it's just a shame he peaked so late. Was my favourite fighter and I'm thankful for the great fights he gave us fans. I actually didn't think the Murray fight was such a robbery, Martinez won a lot of the rounds besides the KD ones.

I remember people were asking for a GGG fight after the Chavez fight. GGG fought in US against Proksa 2 week before Martinez fought Chavez in Sept 2012 was GGG was a champ since like 2010. Martinez chose to fight Murray instead in Argentina.

Murray beat a faded Martinez, IMO. He was already a deteriorated fighter.

saying it doesn't mean much especially when he knew he would never fight him. he had the chance to fight him but he chose murray instead because he thought he would beat murray even with bad knees. that turned out to be false and he had to steal a decision. its too bad really. if ggg had beaten martinez then none of this cotto middleweight nonsense ever would have happened. just shows the ripple effect that ducking can have on the boxing landscape.

I think Murray beat Martinez too but at the time, he was still technically the lineal champ and just came off a PPV win against Chavez so it would have still been a good fight to watch. Martinez could've rested a bit more too since he only fought once that year.

Well I doubt he actually didn't think he would win against Cotto. If he won, which I assume he believed he had a small chance to do, then I think he would have every intention to fight GGG.

I do agree he didn't want GGG after his Chavez win even though people were asking for it. Also agree with what you said about the efects on the lineal champ issue. GGG is the real MW champ though as most know it so it doesn't matter too much if he's not the lineal champ.

He was lineal champ but was never able to land that big name fight to pay for his retirement. That's why I have no issue with him picking Cotto over Golovkin.

A fight between the Martinez that fought Murray and Cotto vs GGG would have been terrible to watch in hindsight.
