Because he hurts everyone he fights. So you either retreat and try to survive(Hopkins) or step up and get smashed(pascal). Those are the two most recent examples. But the trend is the same since he's hit that top level.Your name is "high-tech" you're always talking about skills and etc... and you think Kovalev will beat the breaks off of Ward who is one of the most skilled, technical fighters today? How's that? Aren't you a little biased with post-soviet fighters?
Outside of the boring "He punches bigger and he is bigger" argument I didn't read one single normal reason why Kovalev would beat Ward.
More ring IQ? Ward
More speed? Ward
Better defense? Ward
More well rounded? Ward
Stamina? Same
Chin? Unknown
So I can't see the reasons why would be Kovalev the favourite in this fight.Comment

If you think that a 49 years old version of Hopkins and Jean Pascal are on the same level as Ward then fine, let it be but I think it's highly delusional to think that. Those are nice wins for Kovalev but they aren't one Ward's level. On the opposite I'm not sure that Kovalev is on higher level than the Froch Ward has beaten or the Kessler Ward has beaten (both of them easily). Sure, Kovalev is bigger than them and punches bigger but there are many other aspects in this sport with we can measure fighters not just that two.Comment

of course he can win. ward may outbox kovalev, or even win the fight on the inside. he has outs.
so can our sergey. he has power, and may even have an advantage on the outside because of his size and work rate.
that's what makes this a great fight!
kovalev's people don't seem to be sh#tting on the fight, the way a lot of opposing promotors / camps are doing.
guys do it with golovkin, ward, kovalev, probably more than any other fighters in boxing today. you don't sh#T on the biggest fight in your division if you don't have some doubt in your mind. you can make money fighting cans when you are on top. these guys are a threat to the ability to get on TV with an easy fight.Comment

I don't think those guys are on the same level but that wasn't my point, it was about being hurt and ive yet to see a recent fight of kovalev's that he doesn't hurt the guy in. I have no reason to believe he can't hurt ward. So as far as reasons why kovalev can win, that's the biggest one. Ward can be hit, his last opponent tagged him and he was several levels below kovalev. And without doubt kovalev is a higher level than froch who was outboxed by George groves. I'd just love to see it though, hopefully they can make it happen. If you think that a 49 years old version of Hopkins and Jean Pascal are on the same level as Ward then fine, let it be but I think it's highly delusional to think that. i think you overrate Wards skills...i watched him fighting Abraham and Kessler these guys still landed some of their shots, do you really think Kovalev who is much bigger and stronger(with his crazy power) than them will not land his shots on Ward?even smith(dude who threw about 10 punches in 9 rounds) hurt Ward in the 6 roundIf you think that a 49 years old version of Hopkins and Jean Pascal are on the same level as Ward then fine, let it be but I think it's highly delusional to think that. So did John "The Beast" Mugabe ! Everyone always forgets that Boxer/Punchers r always the ones that wipe out the pure punchers . No one thought Mugabe could be beat because he had ridiculous punching power . Hagler's power was underrated , but he wore Mugabe's azz out and punished him . We'll just have to wait and see .Comment

I don't think anyone is thinking that based solely on his punching power. Kovalev stands out because of his power, but he is dangerous because he is smart and knows how to land his power even on tricky guys like Hopkins and Pascal. It is not like Kovalev goes in winging punches hoping for a KO, he throws accurate combinations that had Hopkins in full survival mode for 12 rounds and obliterated the tough Pascal.
Ward does have tremendous skills, and I imagine he would outbox Kovalev in spots. I don't think he could avoid the power altogether, and I don't think he could withstand it when it comes.Comment
