Gennady Golovkin is the only top amateur fighter from that 2003/2004 class at 165 that ended up dropping down to 160 and not even considering fighting at 168. If the process was as "no duh" as you want to imagine it being, why is Golovkin the only fighter at 165 to spend his life at 160 as a pro?

Because, if you go back and look at the amateur fighters that were peers of Golovkin at 165, he's the only one who is still at 160. Again, logic is a fickle thing when you've got near unlimited access to information

If you go over his list of names he fought in the amateurs at MW, the ones to move up were Dirrell and Bute. So who are all these other peers of his that have moved up to 168?

again, shitbrick, 165 = middleweight. There is same day weigh-ins in the amateurs. Very bizarre you keep mentioning him "moving down" from 165 to 160 when they are the same weight class.

He's the only one of his peers that fought at 165 that is still a middleweight? You realize he beat Korobov and Andy Lee, who are in fact, career middleweights. Not only are your posts annoying they are highly inaccurate.

Chavez Jr owed Top Rank the one fight and sought to finish off that fight and get his promotional freedom (Top Rank had already leveraged the prior final promotional fight, with Sergio Martinez, into three additional fights [two Vera fights and the owed fight] and Chavez Jr was no longer playing that); Chavez Jr already has money, so his focus seemed explicitly on getting to a position to call his own shot.

Again, this is all public record.

Top Rank had no intent of ever letting Chavez Jr finish out the deal, and that's pretty obvious; if Chavez Jr had taken the fight, by the time the next fight came around, win or lose, the rumored $10m/$5m final fight would've been replaced with another option fight deal

With the exception of heavyweights, most of the top boxers of the last 30 years have moved up to take on bigger challengers in larger divisions. The list speaks for itself: Duran, Leonard, Hearns, Chavez, Roy Jones Jr, Holyfield, Hopkins, Toney, Wright, De La Hoya, Naseem, Barerra, Morales, Mosely,Trinadad, Williams, Martinez, Calzaghe, Cotto, Pacquiao, Mayweather......the list goes on.

If GGG and his people can't see the connection between stardom and moving up through divisions, then they must be blind.

Yeah, Andre Ward and Carl Froch are exactly the names I was thinking of too. Also all time un-greats Marvin Hagler, Willie Pep, Carlos Monzon & Aaron Pryor.

To me all these "jr." divisions are garbage. If GGG was to move up, move up to 175. to hell with 168. Ward and GGG should both move to 175

The original divisions, even to this day, still have way more meaning.

Boxing has gone all to sh|t, fighters trying to suck every last drop of water out of their bodies in order to gain an advantage. Look what Canelo is doing to himself. It would fix itself if they went back to same day weigh ins. GGG, Canelo, and Ward would suddenly be bigger guys. All Lt Heavyweights.

The financials are OK with guys like Canelo, Cotto, Froch, Chavez formerly. These are all ppv, lots of money to go around, with GGG taking B side money. Like for Chavez, he was offered less than 30%, which came out to 2.5m + upside.

I have no problem with him not moving up but most people who box that long have moved up in the amateurs, so I don't see how that means anything.
