Margarito has the size and stamina that might make things especially tough for Mayweather at the time, especially having recently moved up to welterweight when the fight could have happened.
The thing that gets ignored by Margarito fans is that we've also seen Margarito in there with defensively responsible fighters who had solid footspeed and countering ability. It it wasn't pretty.

The Clottey fight tells a story too, especially Rounds 3 and 10.

Look at Rd 3 (starting at the 10:40 mark). Watch how easily Clottey slips and avoids those S..L...O...W punches by simplying taking a half step back while standing in right in front of Margo. Watch how easily Clottey scores with lead left hooks (remember, this would be version of Mayweather with the devastating leaping left hook) and repeated straight right counters (even rocks Margo @ 11:50).

In Round 10, watch a now on-the-move Clottey outbox Margo with BASIC foot movement and counters.

Again, Clottey, primary left handed fighter who hurt his hands in this fight, managed to give Margo trouble with basic foot movement and a high guard. You don't believe a faster, better defensively, more offensively diverse, high ring IQ, and probably the best conditioned fighter in the sport, prime version of Mayweather who specialized in decreasing opponents' work rate could not replicate Clottey's blueprint (if he wanted) over 12 rounds against Margarito?

Don't let your hate for that man blind you: Mayweather would have ******ED Margarito something terrible and all of y'all know it. That fight would be Sergio Martinez/JCC Jr all over again without the late round rally. By round 6, Margarito believers would have been slinking out of the arena Baldomir style.

    It is what it is.

couldn't have been no worse than that s**t fight with Baldomir, or that gross ******ation of Marquez, where he cheated on the scales...

completely disagree, Marg would not have troubled Mayweather

Mayweather was (is) much better, but I could def see him losing a decision pending who was judging the fight

              so what ?

he would keep missing, and keep getting countered

Margo would have a better chance if Mayweather was shot, or if his legs were gone..... otherwise, nada

that is exactly what would have happened

Margarito would have been badly outclassed..... he would have fallen waaay short, and he would never have been in that fight

all of those guys came up from the lighter weights like Floyd, and Floyd hadn't really settled into being a full fledged ww himself at that time...

Margarito was a huge natural ww who probably rehydrated to close mw by fight time...So was Williams...Williams and Margarito sized up perfect, but Floyd would have given up height, reach, and size to both of those guys...maybe not so much reach due to Floyd having good reach...
both have been outboxed by smaller men....mayweather is levels better than anyone who handed them a loss....Lara deserved to beat Williams...I had Martinez by two points in the first fight scoring it live...great fight

mayweather in 2005-2007 was a lot more athletic than 2015

size and reach isnt everything...you actually have to hit something to win rounds.

Carlos Quintana, Daniel Santos, Cotto, Lara, etc none of the guys who beat them had mayweathers ring IQ, defense, speed, or counterpunching ability.

who ducks a no name with a trinket? to fight two international stars in ODLH and Hatton...also to fight for a lineal title and a guy coming off his two career big wins in Baldo.....doesnt make sense....he went on to fight more dangerous guys than margo before he retired for good too....kinda odd.
