Here's the dilemma, if Cotto gives GGG step aside money and then loses to Canelo, then the WBC needs to force Canelo to fight GGG next. But contrary to reasonable thought, I don't believe the WBC would take any stance against Canelo, since they would rather see him with the MW title.
This is exactly why Golovkin wants an agreement that the winner must fight him in their next fight and the agreement must be signed by both Cotto as well as Canelo. So far, both fighters refuse to sign such a document. The reason they refuse is that it would be legally binding, beyond any penalty or regulation of the WBC. If the winner was to refuse to fight GGG, he would then have the option of going to court and getting an injunction preventing the winner from fighting against ANY other opponent in ANY weight class.

The WBC expected Cotto to fight Canelo as his voluntary back in May, with the winner fighting GGG as the mandatory. When that fight fell apart, so did the WBC's plans. Cotto really messed things up by delaying his voluntary so long and proposing so many terrible opponents that HBO decided enough was enough and they needed a guarantee of a Canelo fight before they would accept any of Cotto's choices.

Now we are at the point where WBC is discovering that Golovkin is not a man to mess with and that he intends to hold them to their word. He is the mandatory defense and will force the issue if necessary. WBC is now stuck in a situation they never expected and they have to find a way out of it. Unfortunately for them, no one seems to be cooperating. The next few weeks should be interesting.

I can see the WBC " making it available " to Canelo, by ranking him favorably, and sanctioning him as an opponent..... but they cant really force him to do anything.

To be honest, I dont care..... he should fight Golovkin for that belt if GGG is the current holder.

If Golovkin is elevated, as suggested above, then yea the title is obviously meaningless..... especially if Team Golovkin continue defending against less-than-stellar competition.

I love to watch Golovkin in the ring so I'm with you there but as far as GGG wanting contracts signed (and where are you getting that info from?) it's not gonna happen. Neither Cotto nor Canelo are guided by fools and you'd need to be a fool to sign such a restrictive contract.

I don't think the WBC has any plans regards these 3 fighters. They might have desirable outcomes but beyond that they are like an opportunist surfer trying to catch a wave, if one doesn't work out another will be along soon enough. When did the surf ever stop?

Take everything with a grain of salt. The reality is that even though Lee does have the WBO belt you dont see or hear GGG pushing for it as much as they're pushing for the WBC belt. A couple of things come into play, along with the WBC Heavyweight belt, the WBC middle weight belt is the most storied belt in boxing, and it is attached to the 3rd biggest draw in boxing. So Yes I do believe they are desperate for the belt more so because its in the hands of Cotto. As I asked before, If GGG was offered bouts with both Mayweather and Cotto, the Mayweather fight would be at 154, and the Cotto fight would be for the WBC Middleweight belt, which fight would GGG choose? I'll give you a hint, he aint chasing the middleweight belt on that one.

These kind of marginalizations r sickening !!! GGG's KO streak is a formidable achievement . Do u know how hard it is to KO even journeyman in boxing ? Cotto wouldn't of KOed Stevenson , Monroe or Rosado . Instead of marginalizing GGG's achievements , just admit your a Cotto fan and your scared to death for Cotto to fight him so instead u gotta keep up this act that he isn't qualified

Both Loeffler and Sulaiman have stated that GGG will not step aside without a signed agreement from both fighters that the winner fights GGG. Loeffler stated this in the post fight press conference after the Monroe fight and Sulaiman also stated this in a post fight interview. I have already posted the videos here and if you want to see them, do a search for them on YouTube or here on the board.

GGG is well within his rights to make such a demand as he is currently the mandatory challenger and has the right to force Cotto to fight him in his next fight or vacate the title. He has gone through similar crap back in Germany and will not go through it again in the US. No signed agreement and he does not step aside which blocks Cotto from defending his title again.

IF the WBC does not intend to follow through with it's mandatory requirements, they should not have them in the first place and should not have an interim title which GGG won with honor, not by defeating a drained out opponent like a coward.
