This is true. As hard as HBO is trying to force him down everyone's throats as a superstar the fact is that he is not there yet. Guys like Cotto and Canelo have a way bigger fan base than him.

Still, the WBC said that Cotto had to fight GGG next after Geale. It's bullshit that they are now going back on their word just to accommodate a Mexican fighter.

Idk....on one hand, the WBC is once again making up rules as they go along. On the other hand, Canelo/GGG is way more intriguing than Cotto/GGG.

we all knew this was going to happen. i'm more confident that they'll keep their word this time around once the cotto-alvarez superfight is out of the way. of course at that point canelo could just opt to drop the wbc and fight for lemieux's ibf instead...

You know, it might be worth it. Maybe not demand money for stepping aside but a contract. The only leverage GGG has to get either Cotto or Canelo in the ring is his mandatory shot. At the moment the WBC make more money with the belt around Cotto's or Canelo's waist than they would with it around Golovkin's and they simply can not be trusted to enforce their own rules.

If Golovkin's people can wrangle a cast-iron guarantee from both boxers, a contract to fight the victor, for stepping aside it might work out better than relying on the honour of the WBC.

Should GGG refuse to step aside the chances are the WBC sanctions Alvarez/Cotto anyway and as long the sanction fees keep coming in they'll be in no hurray to enforce Golovkin's mandatory shot.

In an ideal world we would not even be discussing this. This shouldn't happen but as awful as it is maybe Golovkin will be better served trading his chance at Cotto entirely at the whim of the WBC for a guaranteed shot at the victor of Alvarez/Cotto. It's shameful but that's what it is.
