I think that HBO told Cotto that they would not air his fight on June 6th, unless he agreed to fight Canelo this year, and Cotto agreed. Not 100% sure, but I think that's how it went down.

I would almost guarantee that any such agreement gives Cotto some wiggle room.

        ^^^^^^This.

Divas is what is killing boxing. Mike Tyson wasn't kidding when said there weren't boxers in the ring on May 2nd they are business men. The same goes for Canelo and Cotto.

He's also been schooled by Margarito and Mayweather and Pacquaio and Trout.

If he fights Golovkin you can be certain that he will be bruised and bleeding before it's over. That's why he's running so hard.

Is there a PR equivalent of BET that he can fight on? Because if he tries to screw HBO that's where he will be fighting and they better have room for the rest of Roc Nation's stable because none of them will be fighting on HBO anytime soon if Cotto reneges on his contract with them. He will be wishing he signed with Haymon Protection Agency instead, at least then he could fight on Spike.

It's no guarantee man. Did Golden Boy or Canelo sign this same agreement?

A promise to negotiate the fight is not the same as a guarantee to actually fight someone. And any guarantee is impossible without the fight being negotiated and signed by both parties in the first place.

He's not trying to screw over HBO or nothing like that. I don't get what is so hard to understand that cotto DOES NOT CARE OR GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT A MEXICAN DATE OR HOLIDAY!?

He was definitely schooled by the circumstances of Margarito I. No doubt about that. His team was lax in supervising Margarito's hand-wraps, and he paid the price. He learned from the experience. I'm sure that's one reason that he asserts more control over his career now.

Regarding your Margarito comments -- has there been a single professional boxer who has come to Margarito's defense when it comes to the handwraps? This "knee-guel" crap is brainless. Even respectable Mexican boxing fans attempt to distance themselves from Margarito.

Cotto handled the whole Pacquiao fight like a moron...from the catchweight to the complete absence of a competent corner. He was definitely taken to school there too.

Mayweather fight? Not much of a schooling. A respectable performance, even in defeat.

Trout? Embarassing, though closer than the judges had it.

Did I say, or did HBO say, that it had to be in September? NO, NO ONE SAID THAT. Canelo can fight someone else in September because there is no possible way that Cotto will be fighting that soon after a June fight. The guy barely fights once a year, can't possibly expect him to fight twice in three months.

The point is that Cotto fights Canelo on HBO in his next fight. That is what was agreed to. I think the only way HBO would give him a pass would be if he fought his mandatory against GGG but everyone, including HBO, knows that is never going to happen. So Cotto fights Canelo next, no date specified, or he never fights on HBO again. May not even fight on another network either if HBO decides to press the agreement in court.

So damn! The Geale fight may be Cotto's retirement fight. If he loses it most definitely will be as there will be no middleweight fights for him after that. Maybe he can convince Chavez to drop down and fight him!!
                      On Spike!
