I don't doubt that Al Haymon has violated the Muhammad Ali Act. However, so has Golden Boy, Top Rank and every other promoter. The Muhammad Ali Act is a toothless law that no one follows. It should be interesting to see how this whole thing shakes out!

I think one of the significantly relevant points will be that even though he retains a "promoter" on paper to run the event, Haymon pays that "promoter" a flat fee, but it is Haymon that receives and controls all the advertising and ticket revenue. That makes Haymon a de facto promoter, in direct violation of the Ali Act.......

This is exactly what Floyd Mayweather did when he was working with Golden Boy Promotions before he acquired a license for his own promotional company. He paid GBP a flat fee plus expenses to serve as the promoter and Mayweather kept all the profits.

I am not sure this is a winnable argument for GBP, considering that they had the same relationship with Mayweather.

Fwiw I've always rooted for Oscar & GBP, but he's made it really had to root for him over the past year or so, but I guess desperate situations call for desperate moves.

Ehhhhhh I wouldn't say it isn't hard to figure out. It is but it's not because of the rules or the strict law as we know it. It's because of the exceptions. There are always exceptions. And if there isn't, there are always lawyers trying to create exceptions. It's ultimately up to the courts. But that's where all the case law come from. And that's where civil litigators make their bones. Criminal law is kinda different but some of the same stuff applies.

‘(b) FIREWALL BETWEEN PROMOTERS AND MANAGERS-

‘(1) IN GENERAL- It is unlawful for--

‘(A) a promoter to have a direct or indirect financial interest in the management of a boxer; or

‘(B) a manager--

‘(i) to have a direct or indirect financial interest in the promotion of a boxer; or

‘(ii) to be employed by or receive compensation or other benefits from a promoter, except for amounts received as consideration under the manager’s contract with the boxer.

‘(2) EXCEPTIONS- Paragraph (1)--

‘(A) does not prohibit a boxer from acting as his own promoter or manager; and

‘(B) only applies to boxers participating in a boxing match of 10 rounds or more.
