Now obviously Joe's countrymen feel that he is a ATG, and one of the best.

Conditioning is the hardest and most unpleasant form of training but it means everything in the ring. Yea, most people know him for his later fights, when his hands were brittle and wrecked. But, he was an aggressive SOB who beat guys by being unrelenting. He was past prime by the time he was able to land the big fights in America.
you make it seem like he was trying to land the big fights when he clearly was not. he was scared of flying remember?

But I think highly of Carl Froch
gonzales is 27 years old and has already beaten the best guy in 3 divisions. calzaghe was 35 when he did that in one divisoin. how can you compare them?

            That's why.
            This ^^

Joe was a damn good fighter though. Awkward bastard, southpaw, fast hands, great work rate and great use of angles. H2h he gives plenty of great fighters trouble and the Hopkins and Kessler fights show this.

But his resume is just severely lacking compared to an ATG standard, i personally place him as a near great. Surefire Hofer but lacks the resume for ATG status.

He did indeed. However hopkins defence and clean punching + the kd made it a close fight. From memory. A draw would have been not an outrageous result, but Calzaghe winning was fair also.

He didn't really have many notable wins until the last few fights in his career. As for the Hopkins fight, its silly when people try to discredit the win and point to how many of Joe's punches were slappy or didn't land clean as if Hopkins just has to show up and automatically wins unless he gets trounced. He didn't do anything of note in the fight from rd 4 on, I had it 115-112 and clearly remember scoring 123 and 10 for Hopkins and every other rd for Joe.
