Comments Thread For: HBO President Expects Canelo-Cotto To Happen in Fall

NEW YORK – Assuming Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto win their upcoming fights on the network, HBO Sports president Ken Hershman expects that they’ll fight each other sometime in the fall.

Intense negotiations for a May 2 bout between the Mexican star and the Puerto Rican icon broke off in January, prompting an aggravated Alvarez to instead secure a fight against James Kirkland. Hershman doesn’t think that failure will remain an impediment to them completing contracts the next time around.

I love how HBO put their foot down on Cotto refusing to air his next fight unless he agrees to fight Canelo. Cotto wasted everyone's time the last time around and HBO is making sure that won't happen again. Good job HBO

I don't believe Cotto was wasting anyone's time, he was positioning himself to make more money with Roc Nation. This fight will happen & both of these guys will have the fight of the year. Neither one of these guys duck anyone, look at the history! They are both entitled to make the max amount of money.

        Agree.

Man, thank you, HBO. We are finally gonna watch King Taino Canelo give Cotto a brutal beating. Long live King Taino Canelo!

Well that means we can expect Geale & Kirkland to win their fights.

Funny how one fight is at 157lbs and the other at 155lbs.

They owe us for blocking Kovalev/Stevenson.

Both Top Rank and Golden Boy have stated that they negotiated and agreed to all the terms sometime late last year. Then both sides said they were just waiting on Cotto to officially sign. All a sudden Cotto and his team put the stall tactics. And Top Rank said Cotto and his management stopped returning phone calls and emails. Golden Boy put like 4 different deadlines and still Cotto and his team refused to respond to Golden Boy let alone his supposed promoter Top Rank. There are no reports that they were asking for more money or anything specific. There is a difference between negotiating back and forth and just flat out cutting off communication. Everyone figured Cotto was stalling to see if the Mayweather fight fell apart so he could sneak in to that fight. Finally Canelo got tired of waiting and needed to take a plan B fight. Months later we find out the entire time Cotto's management was negotiating a deal with Roc Nation. So for at least 6 months Cotto was wasting HBO, Golden Boy and Top Rank, fans time negotiating on a fight Cotto had no intentions of taking.

My only beef is Cotto and his manager were flat out lying to the media all this time stringing everyone along. And HBO clearly was frustrated by the unprofessional way he handled it because they flat out refused to air his next fight unless he agreed to fight Canelo next.

What I don't understand (well, I DO understand because many people don't think things through from an Economic perspective) is why so many people are going in on Cotto so hard for not jumping into signing a contract to fight Canelo Alvarez in May when he was being pressured to do so...knowing full well that May/Pac were negotiating to fight on the same proposed date and that any announcement of a fight by May/Pac would necessarily bump them from that date, making Cotto and Canelo look like chumps and them scrambling to find a new date to fight, which for a fight like Canelo/Cotto would not have been acceptable for May 9th like they are doing with Canelo/Kirkland OR for MSG during the Puerto Rican festivities in early June b/c it's too soon after May/Pac to expect anyone to plunk down another $60 the next month for Cotto/Canelo. There is no way on Earth that the two potentially highest grossing fights currently capable of being made in the sport were going to be sold on PPV with barely ONE MONTH between them, especially when the first one is the highest priced PPV in history, clocking in at $100. Cotto is a smart businessman and knew that if May/Pac were to end up fighting, the most sensible thing do do would be to find some type of placeholder fight and THEN fight Canelo in September for Mexican Independence Day as the next big Superfight. Most likely, Mayweather will not fight again the rest of the year and by waiting until September it gives enough time between for there to be a cooling off period after May/Pac AND Cotto-Canelo get to pick up the extra revenue generated as a result of increased interest in the sport because of May/Pac. What better way to cash in than be the NEXT huge fight on the horizon after May/Pac gets over with? Thing is, there is just no way they were gonna do the two biggest fights in the sport back-to-back months like that because Cotto is a smart enough guy to know that after May/Pac and the price tag attached, fighting the 2nd biggest fight to be made that soon after is not an intelligent business move. Assuming Canelo and Cotto both win their tune-ups, we're gonna get the matchup in September. We just have to be patient.

If Cotto knew he wasn't going to fight Canelo in May for a multiple reason that he felt benefited him I'm fine with that. My beef is just be up front and tell top rank, tell golden boy tell the the fans. Instead he let that circus go on. from the time Canelo beat Lara till what Feb 2015 everyone was trying to make this fight. Him and his manager kept releasing public statements we are trying to fight Canelo we are negotiating which was a flat out lie. We find out after Top Rank, Golden Boy, HBO had worked out all the points that Cotto and his team cut off negotiations with them some time around Dec 2014. Yet his manager putting out fake statements about negotiating this fight but both Golden Boy and Top rank say Cotto wasn't responding to their calls. We find out months later what Cotto was really doing was working on a deal with Roc Nation. If Cotto had been up front he would of saved himself all the backlash he has received. Instead he hasn't fought in a full year and looks like he ducked GGG and Canelo.
