Lie about what? Who for May 16th did you have in mind? Personally I wanted either Hopkins (at 175-170) or Lara. There were no other big name options period.
Do you know what Golovkin's highest rated fight to date was? It was one of his lowest ranked opponents - Curtis Stevens. Stevens fought on NBC a bunch of times just like Monroe fought on ESPN a bunch of times.
It's not hard to understand some of the marketability to their selection. Fans tuned in to see Golovkin fight a sub 10 puncher, now they'll tune in to watch him fight a sub 10 mover. The ratings will be fine, the ticket sales are already showing there's strong fan interest. Golovkin's a name, they can move him against a guy like Monroe just as easily as they could against a guy like Lara but with less political hassle and a lower price.
Golovkin had two lousy rounds vs Rubio, and left more of a fan buzz than has been seen in a long time.
Furthermore I wouldn't get caught up in the HBO numbers. It seems regardless of the fight, save Chavez & Cotto, the ratings for a prime time Saturday night fight are consistently between 1.1-1.4 mill, depending on what else is on tv that night. Even Danny Garcia/Rod Salka had good tv numbers proving boxing fans watch regardless.
I know you're giving valid reasons and all your facts and statements are on point .I just meant lie and spin it to make it seem like this a acceptable fight for GGG when it isn't , this isn't a good fight on paper It could surprise which would be wicked good but everyone is expecting another slaughter on an over matched opponets.
Personally I think it's a joke that you take shots at Lara but condone GGG when his Laras resume makes GGG look like a contender not the 1 in his div and you giving a pass on Monroe fight which even as a fan of his you shouldn't. In your own words Laras the step child of his stable but has managed a top notch resume while GGG has full HBO support and they feed us this drivel.
I'm not really get caught up in the numbers but pointing out that if HBO and K2 want the GGG brand to grow they need to do something beyond fighting the level of comp he currently is. That should say something that his ratings haven't grown since Stevens because people are probably somewhat tired of him beating down over matched comp.
GGG has the potential to be one of the main faces in boxing crowd pleasing style, genuine nice guy persona, humble,Maybe one of the best right now but I just don't see how he gets there fighting the Monroes of the world.Comment

There is nothing to mad about for the May date because there isn't anyone to fight. He just fought Murray, who is a guy I've been wanting GGG to fight since he fought Martinez. For May its simply about availability. We can go over the list again:
Andy Lee vs Peter Quillin is set.
Billy Joe Saunders is fighting on the undercard.
Jacobs is fighting on the card as well.
Canelo is fighting Kirkland.
Cotto is not interested at this time.
N'dam is fighting David Lemieux.
Chavez Jr is fighting Fonfara
Andre Ward is fighting TBA in July
Carl Froch apparently is holding out for Chavez
Dirrell is fighting DeGale
Andrade isn't even interested
Murray, already fought
Geale, already fought
Arthur Abraham has been ordered to fight Stieglitz again.
Felix Sturm is fighting Fedor Chudinov
This isn't even covering politics, this is just a list of the guys at 160/168. These guys ALL have fights.
So that leaves guys like Monroe, Johnson, Heiland and Sergio Mora. Slim pickings for May. We knew this was going to be the case even before the Murray fight just based on guys signing fights for around May. There is nothing here. So it's essentially a stay busy fight. He can do that or not fight at all. Your extractions are for him to fight people he literally can't fight right now. After May, of course, it has to be a bigger fight, they have to go after either a big name or unification. And they've said just that.Comment

Hopefully it's against Andrade. Dude's been calling him out for a while so theoretically Lara should make the fight. It would be an unification fight which would be huge for the winner in all aspects.Comment

I didn't mean Lara was a lesser fighter because of all that. What I ment was that his team (Haymon), don't value him highly/don't push him. As a result he's not viewed as that big of a star as his talent would indicate. Because of that, demand for a Golovkin/Lara fight isn't that big. I thought this would be a great fight stylistically. Master evader vs Master hunter.I know you're giving valid reasons and all your facts and statements are on point .I just meant lie and spin it to make it seem like this a acceptable fight for GGG when it isn't , this isn't a good fight on paper It could surprise which would be wicked good but everyone is expecting another slaughter on an over matched opponets.

But there's heavy politics involved for sure, and if Haymon were actually to do business with HBO, it'd be at a steep price as well. Monroe in this case is a generic knock-off, therefore I'm reluctantly ok with it and can appreciate it for some of the same reasons I was looking forward to Golovkin/Lara.
Outside of Hopkins & Lara (for which most fans boo'd those match-ups=low demand but high price and higher chance to turnover the apple cart), there really were no top level opponents available for May/June. In addition, both Hopkins & Lara stopped campaigning for a Golovkin fight after he fought Murray. That killed me because I knew that might be the only way those fights got made.
Golovkin/Monroe will do good numbers. The rate of growth to Golovkin's popularity will indeed probably plateau, but that's to be expected without a major name regardless. This keeps his name relevant and warm though for when that major fight finally does happen and will then give him a bigger 'bounce'.Comment

Absolutely I believe that. My reasoning is that Lara is kind of fragile as it is at 154, he seems like he could campaign at 147 if he really wanted to. At 160 against Golovkin I believe he would get crushed. Just watch the first few rounds of Lara vs Angulo to understand what I'm saying. I don't think Lara belongs at 160 let alone against a powerful guy like Golovkin. I like Lara at 154, he's got some skills but it's bad matchup against Golovkin, he wouldn't be able to keep him off. Again, he had his hands full with Angulo who is slow as hell, doesn't cut off the ring well and let's be honest, not very skilled. But his pressure and his power was enough to really bother Lara and of course got dropped twice. It's not a fair match up for Lara. I want to see him against guys like Andrade, Charlo and the likes.
Murray is a big, strong durable top ten middleweight who obviously could at least go rounds with GGG. I don't see Lara going past 4 or 5 rounds against Gennady to be honest. That's why imo it's a step down. A better name on his resume perhaps though.Comment

Yeah agree with what you say about Lara and almost everything in the post. But I think Haymon has done a great job considering GB pretty much deserted him allowing TR to win a purse bid against Vanes which is the only time they did business in how long and the shenanigans they tried to pull when he fought Angulo. I may disagree about Monroe being viabLe opponet for him ( Still will watch the fight and hope Monroe puts up a decent effort ) and your right we don't know his ceiling but Indont think he's showed in any of his fights to belong among the top tierI didn't mean Lara was a lesser fighter because of all that. guess for me it's I like GGG and I've seen HBO put him on the scene for a couple years and probably impatience on my part wanting him to be in a fight against a legitimate threat it just feels repetitive on who he's fighting and I don't think these type of fights helps his brand.
Like you said because of the HBO/Haymon conflict realistically GGG lara isn't going to be a option any time soon I just hope after this they start stepping up the comp level if he wants the other belts cool take on the winner of Lemiux / N'dam if it gets made or overpay Lee if he manages to beat Quillen. Just somethingComment

Lara can be very appealing to the fans with the right dance partner.
They need to find him someone who is very front foot heavy.Comment
