Actually, GGG will need the other two belts to become the unified champion. But having the WBC title will make it easier to get unification bouts for the remaining titles. Assuming of course that Quillin doesn't get one but I have a feeling that title has already been bought and paid for.
GGGs issue is NOT Cotto. Nor does winning a shiny object from Cotto, make GGG a legend nore anything other than a bum-killa, who beat a Jr Middle past prime.
Now, if this is the thing of "champs...Heroes" Don't let me rain your peasant parade.
But keep it 100.
GGG right now... Overrated and in desperate need of at least ONE decent fight. To say it is Cotto V GGG is laughable.
No one cares about Kneeguel Clucko. Only the belt he holds. If he won't defend it, vacate it. Holding on to it and not defending it against the best makes him look like a coward. Whether he really is or not is not relevant, the fact is that it makes him look like one. Vacate the title if it means so little today. Why hold on to it?
The WBC title alone means little, but combined with the WBA, WBO and IBF it does mean something. Becoming the UNDISPUTED MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION does mean something to a fighter's legacy and it will live on in memory. How many undisputed champions are there in the sport today? Not one that I am aware of. That would be quite an achievement for any fighter in any weight class. That is why Kovalev wants to fight Stevenson.
But Cotto is standing in the way and either he gets out of the way on his own, or his title will be stripped or if he somehow grows the spine to get in the ring with GGG, it will be taken off his prone body in the ring.
Instead of people praising Al Haymon for trying to subvert the long history of the sport by creating yet another title, how about supporting fighters like GGG and Kovalev who actually try to create one champion per weight division the old fashioned way, by winning the titles in the ring!!!!
GGG is a good fighter, but the MW division is only relevant because of Cotto and GGG so when Cotto vacates GGG will have to fight a subpar opponent for it. He will then become an undisputed champion if he can get all the belts which is not guaranteed do to politics and when and if he does accomplish this he will be an undisputed champion with no chance of ever getting into the hall of fame. Why simple he has an un-qualifying pro career to be able to get in the hall of fame. Yet Jotto how some of you call him with his fat gay friend and his pink crocks can quit boxing today and is a first ballot hall of famer. How's that for a washed up bum?

If you are simple minded, perhaps. But I see it as, Cotto having NO business at MW and GGG being such a journeyman killa, that he is ONE, looking to fight smaller men and TWO, DUCKING Ward.
See that?
Cotto has no business at MW, but Golovkin does. Winning the WBC title is one of them.
If Cotto vacates then fine, nobody will say a word about it. Every guy with a simple boxing knowledge knows what would be the outcome of their fight.
And so do you, but you're scared of Cotto taking another ass whopping, this is your main agenda. Your love to Cotto is admirable but laughable at the same time.
You don't care about GGG, as long as he lets little Cotto keep his title and call himself the MW champion of the world.
Cotto didn't duck Canelo, Canelos team was the one who cut negotiation because os the date. Is not secret that Cotto would not have Freddie Roch time to train him due to the May-Pac fight, so don't be an idiot. The are going to fight in September, I guarantee you that, the one I don't think he is not going to fight is GGG because Cotto is not a MW, for Martinez fight he weight 155 pounds, even the night of the fight he was 159 pounds.
They said Cotto's people stopped answering the phone and they weren't going to wait around for him to make up his mind.
I never jumped the gun read from the beginning. He could have accepted the fight with Canelo someone closer to his size but his ego came into play as it has many a time in the past. The real fight for him now is GGG he doesnt want it thats been proven as the subject matter is always changed when it's brought into discussion with the Cotto team. If youve become a champ regardless if it's in a division you may be too small for either vacate the title from the start or fight all comers. Cotto is not the only one who does this but either fight or vacate, doesnt mean you fight tomorrow or next week but put it on paper or atleast something on paper. 8 months no fighting is not helping him in anyway especially as he is getting older.
How could he have accepted the fight? Do ya honestly think that cotto is going to "compete" for that cinco de mayo date? What would get him more money. Fighting in june in msg vs canelo, or cotto-canelo on the same day as floyd-whoever? "ODH was gonna move the date doe" Yes, that's IF floyd fights pacquiao. And if he didn't? Again, cotto isn't gonna "compete" with floyd for a cinco de mayo date that he doesn't give two sh^ts about. Also, how will Roach be able to train both cotto and pacquiao? That's one of the reasons why cotto didn't fight late last year.
