Lara is a proven world class fighter and would have been an excellent choice. and he is available. Monroe is a prospect who hasn't even had a 12 round fight yet.
Are we going to act like Lara was available and that Haymon fighters appear on HBO?

GGG is an elite, pound for pound caliber fighter. If Mayweather fought Errol Spence or Felix Verdejo you guys would be throwing a fit. HBO, GGG and his team deserve criticism here.
Bottom line is that Golovkin had 3 options, Heiland, Johnson and Monroe Jr. If you can think of another viable option that was do-able for May 16th, please name them.

The main reason I'm defending it is because I hated the Johnson and Heiland fights and felt this was the best of a not so great bunch. I would've been criticising like you are now if it was one of the other two but I think Monroe can present a stylistic challenge.

Your hero fights guys who have no chance to win as well, you don't complain. But there's a difference between fighting a solid guy with no chance to a guy two divisions lower, and several skill levels lower. You're nuts.

tureano johnson says that team ggg specifically sought a southpaw. who are they preparing for? lara? but surely they could have just fought lara himself? golovkin doesn't really need learning fights at this point, especially for an opponent he would be a major favourite over anyway

Not mad about this fight, if you fight 4 times a year, who at that date is available and a realistic opponent? GGG already beat the top 160 fighters and 160 is trash anyway right now until some of the 154's move up or if there is some 160 upcoming prospects on the horizon.

You can indeed. The difference is Monroe is ranked top ten in all the sanctioning bodies, and has good potential.

Where was Salka ranked before the garcia fight? No one had even heard of him.

Boone also knocked out Adonis Stevenson, put Andre Ward on the floor, and held Sergey Kovalev to a split decision, so its not like Boone is some bum.......

This is his worst fight since Proksa. You know these fights are a possibility with fighters who fight 4 times a year, but it still sucks.

I'm thinking Ward is the next intended target, especially if the Cotto fight never materializes. GGG is smart to look towards other options at this point and not wait around for another big name.
