  • Monroe ends the KO streak, but not the winning streak.

    Golovkin by UD.

I have a feeling Monroe can survive the beating and go 12 but lose wide. He might win 1 or 2 early rounds. He's got some good skills but on the ropes he looks very vulnerable and that's where most of the damage will be done.

I haven't really seen Monroe's chin tested by a big puncher but I've seen him tagged plenty. And if that happens against GGG, I don't know.

      • Finally - when asked about his family, specifically about whether or not he often takes his son to the gym with him, Gennady offered this short story:

"It's a bit different for me. His life is very easy. He is a boy. My life is very different. He likes games. But boxing is not a game, it's a fight. He can't understand yet. I remember I went to his kindergarten and his teacher called me and said, 'Gennady, nice to meet you. You are a professional boxer?' And I said yes and do you know me? She says, 'Yes, of course. Because your son comes in and there's a small fight outside and your son [raises his arms and] says, 'I am pound-for-pound champion and champion of boxing champion.'' And I told him, 'Son, please, this is not game, this is fight. Please stop.' Right now he finally understands and says, 'I like game, I don't like fight.'"

I can't imagine Golovkin with serious face talking with his son.

I haven't seen that fight -- fair point.

                • This is the only thing I found:

Darnell Boone W8 Willie Monroe, Jr. – In the upset of the night, undefeated Willie Monroe, Jr., 10-1, abandoned his game plan, went on the defensive for most of the fight, and wound up losing by split decision to upset specialist Darnell Boone, 18-17-3. In the first round, Monroe chased Boone around the ring pumping out his jab and following it with a straight right hand. After that, Boone started fighting carelessly but effectively by leaping in with his head down and pressuring Monroe into the ropes. With Monroe stranded on the ropes, Boone attacked the body with hooks, and then landed a very hard lead right to Monroe’s head. But then Boone backed off. Monroe continued to throw one jab at a time and seemed to be fighting cautiously-- this was a step up for him as Boone had 37 career professional fights compared to Monroe's ten. Monroe allowed Boone to keep backing him up against the ropes and land at will. Boone was bullying him around the whole fight and Monroe seemed to let him control the tempo and fell into his game plan. While press against the ropes, Monroe would occasionally land a crisp right hook followed by an uppercut that would back his opponent off of him and it seems that he doesn’t know how to fight against the ropes. Boone's aggression controlled the distance of the fight and the closed quarters that the fight was fought in. Monroe is your typical boxer that fights off his toes, with quick hands, and good movement. Boone pressed the action throughout the entire fight and finally landed a hard right hand to Monroe’s temple that put him flat on his back. He received an eight count. Monroe compained that the knockdown was more of a slip but he was clearly hit on the head and that’s what staggered him. ********** scored the fight 78-73 in favor of Boone. The official scores were 78-73 Boone, 76-75 Monroe Jr. and 77-74 for Boone. Frank Lombardi had Monroe winning by a point, and I don’t know what fight this judge was watching: Monroe Jr. didn’t throw or land enough punches in order to be given more than one or two rounds on any of the scorecards. If a fight was scored on hiding in a defensive shell than I could see how the fight could be given to him.

                    Nice find, man.

Interesting that he fought him in only his tenth bout. That said, sounds like he got dropped hard. Not a good sign ahead of a GGG showdown.
