Why didn't Cotto accept a guaranteed career high payday and secure the fight with Canelo, with the option to push the fight back if Mayweather-Pacquiao got made?
Someone help me understand this about the Canelo-Cotto fight..

Waiting to see if he would get a Mayweather fight?
Which if that was the case not sure why Canelo didn't just wait. I said that when Canelo announced he was moving on...just wait and see if Pac-Floyd happens. He didn't have to rush into a Kirkland fight.
They both screwed up. Divas.Last edited by ИATAS; 02-23-2015, 10:41 PM. -
I get that but why wait when a career high pay day is being offered to you, versus something that had no guarantee?Comment

Got to look at the facts.
Cotto had a damn good shot at beating Floyd if they were to fight again. Which would be the biggest win of his career. And if he beat Floyd, it would mean fighting (faded) Pacquiao up at middleweight, even if he had to switch trainers again. Decent chance of winning that too. And lots of money.
Cotto also had a good chance at beating Canelo, but I don't think he's interested in the possibility of getting his ass stomped out by a Mexican at the point. And if he won? People are going to say he just beat a hypejob that Floyd exposed anyway.
Yeah, it was a lot of money. But any fight Cotto is in is going to be a lot of money.Comment

The Cotto fight was a sure thing, the May 2nd thing was tentative pending Mayweather-Pacquiao.i thought that both parties were aware the fight would be pushed back if Mayweather-Pacquiao was signed.Comment

It wasn't a sure thing he would land another fight with either, as well.Comment

GBP wanted the May date and a foe that could compete with anyone Mayweather would choose besides Pacquiao. Time was thicking, they know how long it takes to promote a fight, something had to get done, and with Mayweather talking into Cotto's ear, it just made things even more difficult.
The longer the negotiaions with Mayweather and Pacquiao took, the less likely it looked to be made.
Be honest, MOst of us here are suprised it's finally got sign this year.
And I could see how GBP would've believed that the Cotto Option was gone.
So the next guy they got is Kikrland, which is not a bad fight, but nothing of what Cotto vs Canelo would've been considering the rivalry.Comment

Because he was holding out since he had a chance at the Mayweather rematch.
From a business standpoint it made sense to take the gamble because if he lost to Floyd for less money, and I'm pretty sure he would have lost, he still had a potential fight with Canelo that would still generate big money.
If he fought Canelo and lost, well, nobody would want to see him fight Floyd again after that.
He gambled and lost. Hopefully he fights GGG or Canelo in the fall.Comment

I don't think Canelo was interested in fighting in New York at all.Comment
