It was rumored from the start that cotto wanted the fight in New York on puerto rican weekend. Canelo wanted Vegas or Texas.
Because, as the OP noted, it would have been a career high payday. That's the point.

When and if Floyd / Pac was announced they would probably have moved the fight to another weekend in May. Which as I might point out, Cotto's team just stated, he might fight at the end of May anyway not on PR weekend.

Cotto never wanted to "wait and see" because of dates. He wanted to wait and see if he got the fight with Floyd.

Again, why the rush if your not sure of the date? Why can't you just wait and see?

a ppv the same month as pac/may? After spending $100 on that? Not happening. That would kill their buys.

Not to mention, it's business. People don't usually pass on sure things like career high paydays for something that might, could, maybe happen.

Which is why I don't understand it, and I don't think he was keen on fighting Canelo for whatever reason he may have had.

Because they thought they would get the May 2 date if they locked up Cotto. They probably didn't think Floyd vs Manny would happen. Lots of people didn't think it would happen.

I really think they were banking on going head to head with Floyd vs Khan.

as for your PPV comment, you just stated it was rumored Cotto preferred to fight in June. How is early June so different than the end of May? It's only a couple weeks difference. If people weren't paying in May they probably couldn't afford it in June either.

So you're willing to compete against Floyd vs (not Pacquiao) on May 2nd for PPV buys. I'm failing to realize where does that make sense.

The only "sure thing" about having 2 PPV's on the same night is that neither show will get to maximize their buys, I'm not a business major but that doesn't seem like good practice to me.

They weren't planning on going head to head with nobody. There wouldn't be 2 ppvs the same night. They wanted to push Floyd off the date completely. And if they did, that would also kill their buys. That makes no sense at all to do. Oscar has khan also.

June 13. 6 weeks. Would have been better than may.

Why couldn't Canelo wait until June? I don't get it.

He could have, but why? The fight was planned for Canelo and Cotto and the date was tentative. Why wait until June? They were both gonna make career high paydays.whats the wait?

The fight would have been pushed back. No question.
