It's not they abandon it. Floyd takes their punches away. If you're continuously getting countered over the jab, you're not going to throw that jab anymore. So when Floyd says, "I take away what you do best", that's what he means.

Yes he can if he can TIME MAYWEATHER...and that is the challenge, CATCHING MAYWEATHER CLEAN ENOUGH TO HURT HIM!

However, Mayweather doesn't stay with what "DOESN'T WORK" like so many other fighters, Mayweather can switch Gameplan vs his Opponents Quickly which then a lot of times makes his opponents Freeze Up Offensively and either it gets them throwing Wild Punches or they become Hesitent to throw punches out of fear of missing and getting countered.

Hopefully the fights gets done so we can see how their styles will match up

Steward was a great trainer, but not so good as a commentator.

True. It's amusing to me when people believe boxers arbitrarily stop using something that's working. As if they know something Oscar didn't know.

Against southpaws, Floyd doesn't use the shoulder roll as much. So not sure if this will apply.

                  but

that is Floyd's best defense (shoulder roll) stance. So the advantage goes to Manny because Floyd needs to use his secondary defensive stance. With his hands up, Manny will be able to attack easier because Floyd is not as ready to counter as is the case with the shoulder roll stance.

With the above in mind, Manny must throw combinations and not let this be a chess match. Other opponents lull themselves into that and lose because they are not as good a boxer as Floyd. That is why Maidana had success. He didn't make it a chess match and you saw that Floyd didn't like that one bit. Floyd just covered up. While Manny is not as dirty as Maidana, if you look carefully, it was NOT that Maidana was dirty or bigger than Floyd. Maidana kept the pressure and Floyd was in defense mode.

Sure, Floyd can try to counter but again, look at the Maidana fight. A few times when Floyd tried to counter, Maidana hit him well due to the openings. Manny is at a different level than Maidana so he doesn't need to be dirty nor need to be bigger than Floyd. All he needs to do is apply smart pressure.

Remember that Manny's punches come in faster and from different angles than someone like Maidana. So it would be very risky for Floyd to open up. If Floyd tries to counter, Manny needs to come back with something every time. Always be the first and last to throw a punch. If Manny can do that smartly, Floyd will have problems. Also remember that Floyd does not fight risky. Floyd will not open up unless he sees the opportunity vs risk factor is manageable and in his favor.

This is much more in depth on how to beat Floyd.
