Comments Thread For: Pascal: Kovalev Didn't Beat Same Hopkins I Fought

NEW YORK – Jean Pascal was impressed with how easily Sergey Kovalev beat Bernard Hopkins on Nov. 8 in Atlantic City

The former WBC light heavyweight champion still can’t help but think the Kovalev-Hopkins fight would’ve unfolded differently had Kovalev boxed a younger Hopkins, who’ll turn 50 on Thursday.

Maybe Hopkins' inactivity in the Kovalev fight had something to do with Kovalev putting him on the defensive...

Pascal was actually outworked by Hopkins for long stretches in their rematch.

Kovalev was just smarter, Hopkins has won fights for years by waiting on a stalking opponent to lull while trying to get in position and then lunge in with a straight right hand and hold after it landed so he wouldn't have to exchange. Kovalev constantly stopped the action after he landed, backed up and reset the pace so that Hopkins couldn't time him coming in and land that right hand, very smart and worked well in that fight.

I've never considered his victory over Hopkins to be the boxing masterclass that some people view it as. Bernard questioned beforehand why previous opponents hadn't been firing back at Sergey in the exchanges. Once he got hit he found out why.

He wasn't able to execute his gameplan because he couldn't risk taking those shots. Whilst it was a solid all round performance by Kovalev and he showcased a level of skill that some had previously questioned, it was his power that primarily allowed him to do that.

Dawson straight up outboxed Bernard. Kovalev made him so apprehensive of his power that he went into risk aversion survival mode for the majority of the fight.

Or he is 50 years old? Hopkins was already inactive. Look at his punch stats in his last five fights. He does not throw much of anything because he can't keep up. He would have lost to most LHW that night. He is 1 year shy of 50 what did people expect to happen?

Pascal fought a better version yes but not by that much. If anyone can lay claim to beating Bernard and actually have some valid point its Joe Calzaghe (yuck) I feel dirty saying that. Even then Bernard didn't let his hands go.

Kovalev did indeed out-box Hopkins, in a raw and pure form. To say he didn't is naive.

Now we know apprehension, because of the obvious power displayed in the first round had something to do with it but Kovalev did fight smart, showed angles and a changing range and combination punching. He out-boxed and out-fought the legend. No two ways about it.
