Probably light training, underestimated his opponent, fight with unrepaired injury; things that often happen in this sport.
But because of that, Stevenson will not underestimate any of his futur opponents.
Sometimes such performance are good for boxers, because every contender start to believe in their chances to defeat you, until they kiss the ground like Kovalev will, against Stevenson in 2015.

This is still a 50/50 fight Stevenson has massive one punch KO power. Both guys are huge punchers there will be a knockout for sure that's guaranteed.

Impossible, team Stevenson already worked on it. Team Kovalev needs to dig deeper to find new strategies, but Stevenson will come up with more tools. So believe in what you want, Stevenson will prevail, Easy...

How about instead of talking what you can do, actually do it instead?

I prefer to believe what my eyes see rather than hearing these coked out trainers and managers talk about how great their fights can do this or that.
          Stevenson is not the talker.
          Remember: Kovalev says,
he wanted to fight Stevenson on TV
he lost the opportunity to KO Stevenson on TV
Stevenson is a piece of **** on TV

          It all came from Kovalev.
Stevenson doesn't talk much, even if the medias makes you believe otherwize, if Stevenson is talking now, you must take it seriously.

"So it's nothing new that we are training to knock Sergey Kovalev out. If he is our opponent, then that's what we are training for, a knock out." Sugar Hill

Well Sugar, he isn't Adonis' next opponent now is he?

Would still pick Hopkins over Stevenson, he is that one handed.
Did you noticed, Ward is a one hand fighter, also the left.
But if Stevenson wants, he can use both.

                      3) Kovalev had no value back then, WBO is not needed for the Undesputed title.
                      4) Adonis Stevenson would be stuck under an HBO contract with less per fight than what Showtime was offering.
                      5) Hopkins had a much greater value, Hopkins was fighting on Showtime but no one knew he wasn't under a contract with Showtime, so he easely jumped boat to HBO to fight Kovalev for less.
                      - WHY ?: Stop lying to yourselves and answer logically to this question:

Now, Haymon will try to find a solution with the 2 networks, Showtime & HBO.
Do you see Stevenson complaining, actually you didn't notice Stevenson's quite happy about it, did you notice.
But your fanaticism mixed with the bias medias (Dan Rafael), made you perceive Stevenson as a timid fighter.
It's a shame for your hopes, when you'll see Kovalev lying on the ground after the brutal KO Stevenson will inflict him.

Stevenson would not have been stuck with an HBO contract after fighting Kovalev. The agreement he had with Duva took him up to that fight only.

After Kovalev, he could have moved on and fought BHop at Showtime.
