Probably light training, underestimated his opponent, fight with unrepaired injury; things that often happen in this sport.
But because of that, Stevenson will not underestimate any of his futur opponents.
Sometimes such performance are good for boxers, because every contender start to believe in their chances to defeat you, until they kiss the ground like Kovalev will, against Stevenson in 2015.

But if Fonfara eventually caught him badly it's no brainer that Kovalev would be able to do much better.

Don't think he is a real talent, I think all his talent is comes from a big left hand. Won't be long before someone figures out if you can avoid the left hand it game over for Stevenson.

Would still pick Hopkins over Stevenson, he is that one handed.

1) Hopkins ask Stevenson to come to Showtime to fight him.
2) The Undisputed title belts were moving around Showtime, IBF & WBA
3) Kovalev had no value back then, WBO is not needed for the Undesputed title.
4) Adonis Stevenson would be stuck under an HBO contract with less per fight than what Showtime was offering.
5) Hopkins had a much greater value, Hopkins was fighting on Showtime but no one knew he wasn't under a contract with Showtime, so he easely jumped boat to HBO to fight Kovalev for less.

Stevenson would not have been stuck with an HBO contract after fighting Kovalev. The agreement he had with Duva took him up to that fight only.

After Kovalev, he could have moved on and fought BHop at Showtime.
