I wonder how many of the people making comments akin to 'lol...you want to give kov credit for failing to stop a 50 year old' also picked Hopkins to win the bout.

With all due respect. This was a Big fight. Both guys had belts.
And Kovalev won, and won clearly. Therefore it's rational to assume that he will get some credit. Maybe you can criticize him for this win 5 years later the way Hopkins was after getting his big, first victory against Trinidad.
Why start this line of thinking immediately after a fight? Give it a rest. If he hasn't fought anybody, then this would be the first time he did. And the other guy of the division wants no part of him.Comment

Most guys Kovalev's age would have gone down and not gotten up from his shots. Hopkins is damn near 50 and managed to not get ko'd by a young ko artist. I knew Hopkins was going to lose, but hey, the old man's got cajones, & is one tough son of a gun.Comment

There was no reason to stop the fight in the 12th. Hopkins came out relatively unmarked and spoke well after the fight. It was a great night for Kovalev. He fought brilliantly. But what really was proven was that Hopkins could go the distance against Kovalev. Now THAT is a fact.It should have been stopped in the 12. Hopkins took unnecessary punishment in the end. That is fact. Kovalev clearly held back from the first round all the way into the first half of the 12th. When he turned up, let his hands go more he had Hopkins out on his feet. This is fact.
Kovalev showed too much respect. Had he went all out earlier he would have taken Hopkins out of there. Hopkins was very cautious and scared which is why he threw so little. Kovalev didn't exploit this because out of respect.Comment
