Strange as it may seem I think Hopkins has the edge. His lost to Joe could have gone either way. Joe was much younger than Hopkins when they fought and I don't think a prime Calzaghe could beat a prime Hopkins of the Trinidad fight or younger. Hopkins had at least 20 successful middleweight title defenses in a row against better overall opponents than Joe. Joe fought most of his fights in the UK and the referees were very kind to him and often stopped his fights way too early to give him KO wins. He would have won anyway but it made him look better than he was. Both men have great records to be proud of but Hopkins' amazing run as middleweight champion until he was over forty and winning new titles and fighting so well at 49 give him an edge over the great Calzaghe in my opinion.

I assume for him it was like the nightmare of prison all over again

Joe gets credit for all he has done and he has done one hell of a lot including never losing a fight. However he gets no credit for watching Hopkins win new championships from his easy chair in retirement. Hopkins did the training and the fighting and the winning so Hopkins gets all the credit and Joe gets none for those wins. Hell Taylor has two wins over Hopkins but that doesn't mean Taylor could beat all the light heavyweights Hopkins beat. It doesn't work that way. You only get credit for fights you fought and won yourself.

how is that strange? calzaghe's resume was terrible even if you give him the gift win over hopkins. without it it's downright doudou.

One of the ******est posts I've ever seen on here. This line of thinking exploits the fan boys vs the fans.

Hopkins has a rather odd resume, he does have some good names on it like Dela Hoya, Trinidad, Jones, Winky, and Johnson but none of those wins really mean much I the grand scheme of things when you look at the circumstances.

His middleweight title reign is somewhat impressive but he wasn't fighting the best fighters in the world at the time either. He middleweight reign is really the same as Calzaghes super middle weight reign.

Name value alone it's easily Hopkins but actually wins is a little harder to decide.

It's not really the same because Hopkins fought multiple top opponents at MW.

Calzaghe fought two fighters in the Top 5, and one of them with Jeff Lacy.

And their resumes are not close to comparable.
