Hopkins is off base here... u dont have be talented at the highest level to be a good trainer or coach... some of the best nba coaches were average players and the goat players were garbage coaches.
Hopkins is not ******. He understands you don't have to be a great fighter to be a great trainer. This is just pre fight talk. He throws verbal punches to get under Jackson't skin. People shouldn't take these kind of statements seriously.

It is like baseball or for that matter any other sport. How many great HOF players made for a great manager or coach? In baseball the great original Baltimore Oriole comes to mind and that would be John McGraw. Other than that it is a short list and most great HOF coaches and managers were mediocre players.
Two of the greatest trainers in boxing history were amateur boxers that never turned pro and that would be Eddie Futch and Manny Stewart. Another great one never boxed and that would be Angelo Dundee. And even HOF trainer Feddie Roach was no more then a club fighter. And believe me because I watched many of his fights back in the day on ESPN. His fights were fun to watch but he wasn't very good.
Just to make it clear I am in noway trying to compare Jackson to these trainers. But he has had a pretty decent career as a trainer that happened to have been a two champ himself.
While I agree with your point, Emmanuel Steward isn't the greatest of examples. He was 94-3 as an amateur and won the national golden gloves.
