Or just fought the mandatory then Kovalev afterwards. That's what I wish he'd done. Fighting Kovalev first means he's very likely going to lose his title just 2 months short of his 50th birthday.

Being a world boxing champ at 49 is an awesome achievement, but there would be an almost magical significance about still being champion at 50.

1st off the fight is next week. no need to try to keep selling it! 1) Showtime never turned down a Hopkins / Stevenson fight because it was never presented! Haymon was trying to stall Hopkins so he would get stripped and his fighter Stevenson could fight for Hopkins vacant belt for leverage! Kovalev's ignorant manager wasn't even privy to the fight until Kathy Duva presented the contract to him and Kovalev the day before Kovalev's last fight !!
