How can you say he almost did it but not quite?

He is really the only non American mega star in boxing in America. Even Chavez Sr didnt have Pacquiao crossover appeal, and Chavez was huge in Mexico, but he wasn't a known name like Pacquiao among casuals.

And no GGG won't be able to do it, he is old already, unless he fights at this pace until his 40s. I can see GGG doing some good PPV numbers around 200-300k ppv buys a fight though if they keep hyping and building him up and he keeps knocking guys out. But I dont see him doing mega numbers.

The next closest is probably Canelo, but he has to speak English to crossover to American fans, he will do good ppv numbers because of the MExican American boxing fans but he has the potential to crossover, but fighting Mayweather and losing the way he did at a young age hurt him. Canelo never had to fight Floyd to be honest, but Oscar threw him in there, and that blemish is the only thing most casuals remember about Canelo they say oh that red head mexican kid who lost to Floyd?
      how old is this thing????????????????????????

A month ago I would have said "yes", but the results of the first ppv proved me wrong. He just doesn't sell. Because he's not willing to go up or down (despite previous claims) and is too old to wait for a new gen at 160, I can't see him ever finding superstar levels of success. As I predicted, Canelo and Cotto aren't going to fight him at 160 so he's probably not going to be given another ppv. He'll stay popular, no doubt, but the facts are the facts and without drastic changes in career path, he's probably hit a ceiling.

He may have to agree with the 155 CW....but I think that is the biggest fight out there...no way they leave all that money on the table.......no way in hell...

Manny did it but Manny had several things going for him (that GGG doesn't):

-Almost 4 million people in the U.S. of Filipino descent as a core base to draw fans from. Is also a national hero and quickly became the most recognized person in a country with ~100 million people. Manny also draws very strong support from millions of other (non-Filipino) Asian-Americans as well as other Asian countries as evidenced by the lucrative opportunities he's had in Macau.

By contrast (with respect to Golovkin), Kazakhistan has a population of less than 20 million and under 25,000 people in the U.S. are from Kazahkistan. So Golovkin's ethnic fanbase is certainly much smaller to start with LOL.

-In the prime of his career (mid to late 20's), Pacquaio established strong, multi-fight rivalries with Mexican legends who will go on to be first ballot HOFers (Barrera, Morales, Marquez). This along with his fight vs. Oscar De La Hoya significantly increased his cache amongst Mexican boxing fans.

By contrast, GGG is in his mid-30s and has yet to face any HOF-caliber opponents. It's one thing to keep hollering "Mexican style!" and have a fan-friendly style and persona but if you are not fighting other elite opponents...

-Manny is a small guy who in his prime - and while moving up through numerous weight classes - was destroying guys who were presumably thought to be too big for him. That drew in a *lot* of casual fans.

GGG can certainly become a star but I don't see him ever approaching Floyd or Pac levels, especially not this late in his career (maybe 3, at most 4, prime years left) with no solid core base of fans to draw from which IMO is a must for a non-American fighter. GGG will be lucky if he ever reaches the star (but not mega-star) status Cotto and Canelo have attained in the U.S., which IMO is a more realistic goal for GGG at this point in his career.
