Comments Thread For: Canelo Claims He Won't Shy Away From Golovkin

I used to bash Canelo religiously because he would constantly pick on smaller men. The Josesito Lopez fight was the worst of them all. Short of a Mayweather pot shot and run strategy, there was zero chance of Lopez winning as he was a much smaller man.
More recently, you have to credit Canelo for his choice of opponents. You can't fault him for taking on Floyd for the big payday. Not one of us would have rejected that one. And he also took on legit jr. middleweights in Trout and Lara, who most jr. middleweights wanted no part of. Canelo should have earned all of our respect, regardless of his cherry picking in the past. I believe him when he says he wants GGG, but I don't think it's happening in 2015. Too high of a risk with too small of a reward. He will wait until GGG builds up his fan base more for a PPV event.Comment

Alvarez should try for Cotto next; big $$'s and more winnable - although def not a certainty - than GGG. Then take another fight, or even two, before looking at GGG.Comment

Can't wait, if GGG gets by Rubio in a impressive fashion, i got GGG by knockout vs Canelo/Cotto winner.Comment

How I long for the throw back era of "I'll fight whoever, whenever, wherever, however and where do I sign?"
Instead we are left with the era of:
"I'll fight you two or three years down the line"
"I'll fight you but let me see how many PPV buys you have to see if you are worthy"
"I'll fight you but you first must agree to this ridiculous catchweight"
"I'LL fight you only if you agree to leave your promoter and sign under my promotional banner."
"I wont fight you in a championship fight unless you let me walk out last despite you being the champ because I am the "A" side of the card."
"I won't fight you unless you wear my pillow size gloves. "
Anyone else like to add to this list feel free I know I missed a few.
"I'll fight you but only in a 20ft ring"
The throw back era was the best era. But it seemed that was more the promoters era. The Promoters were getting rich off those fights and paying their fighters peanuts.
It's all changing now. Fighters are more educated in the bussines aspect of boxing. They're aware of what they're brand is worth, and how much money the bring to the table when it comes to making the ppv type of fights. So you can't really blame the fighters for wanting to get paid. Afterall its also a business.Comment

He says it can happen in a couple years. Ok, I'll write it off as not happening until GGG looks vulnerable. GGG also is an aging clock here. He's already 32 and hasn't had a big name fight yet. Rubio is far from a big name so it's not like he's getting anywhere from a victory Saturday night.
His managers need to step it up in getting him a big fight because if Alvarez talks are true of 2 years, that will put GGG around 34-35 years old, already getting up there. Lucky for GGG, I don't think his body has any war damage because most opponents can't even survive long enough to inflict their own return fire. He should be able to compete at a high level even when he's around 35...Comment
