a lot of filipinos are ashamed to be filipino. i know quite a few. why do you think there are so many pinoys claiming Hawaiian and Guamanian? and anyone who knows filipinos know they love to talk about how they are part "spanish" even though Stanford University already disproved of this saying that Filipinos have spanish blood. very few pinoys actually do.

^I always wondered why Filipinos have spanish names, I used to think these Asian looking guys in my class were just Mexicans but they were Filipino they had spanish names.

Thoes Spanish names are just their slave names, I heard the Spanish didn't breed with any Filipino natives, I also heard the original filipinos were negrito looking and that the ones today are mixed with Chinese blood.

I typed in Native Filipinos and this is what I got

I heard similar thing from a Black comedian he said a lot of blacks are ashamed to be black or full blooded black and claim they got indian in them or are mixed. What is the deal with this?

Why be ashamed of your heritage and blood? makes no sense.

I remember reading their last names are Spanish in order for the Spaniards to collect taxes from them while they ruled the Philippines. In fact, the majority of the last names came from a book that contained hundreds of last names and were given out to the populace in order to track them down and heavily tax them. What a lot of folks tend to overlook is the fact that Spain controlled the Philippines through their crown ***el at the time, Mexico. Thus, many Filipinos and Mexicans mixed, more so than with the actual Spaniards. In fact, many of the traditions and words Pinoys believe are Spanish and or Native, derive from Mexican customs and dialects.

Mexican's also benefited from their close relationship, especially the area around Acapulco. Sadly our ties were severed when Mexico found independence, thus the Spaniards had to directly deal with the Filipino's for the last 80 years or so of their governance. So for the over 300 years that "Spain" ruled the Philippines, Mexico and it's customs were the heaviest of influences in the country itself.

In fact, the Patroness Saint of the Philippines is Mexico's own La Virgen de Guadalupe. Many churches in the Philippines were built in what is considered "Mexican Architecture" and both countries share deep roots in Catholicism, with over %80 of both countries being predominantly Catholic.

Many of our roots and vegetables from Mexico were also brought to the Philippines and harvested to the point that Filipino's believe the roots are native to the land.

The Barong Tagalog(or national ware for men) is believed to have derived from "Playeras Guayaberas". Also, Mexico's National dress is believed to have derived from a Filipina "La China Poblana", whom so happened to migrate to Mexico during the colonisation days.

So with all that said, the Philippines shares more with Mexico than they would ever share with Spain itself. In fact, Spaniards seem to have discriminated heavily against Pinoys. That's once of the main reasons they made filipino's wear Barong Tagalog's, since they are see through, the Spaniard Masters could monitor their servants and make sure they weren't concealing any knifes/weapons. They also rejected the idea of teaching them Proper Spanish and hesitated to teach them how to eat with proper utensils. That's why when you travel to the Philippines you will notice how differently they use their utensils when eating and how they tend to neglect the knife. Instead they use the spoon and fork at the same time(one in each hand) and use the spoon as a cutting knife when need be.

Filipino's are proud of whom they are and what they stand for. They have a strong fighting spirit and a huge heart. They are very accepting of others and it shows in their National sports teams. Take a look at Gilas Pilipinas and Azkals and you will think they are composed around Foreigners with local players sprinkled in to save face. However, the Filipino's don't see it as such(for the most part). If anyone has %1 Filipino blood running through their bloodstream, the Filipino people will openly and warmly embrace them and accept them as their own child.

True but that doesn't explain Viloria all of a sudden repping the Philippines when he was never mentioning that side of him before and claimed Hawaiin American punch instead.

It was the media that called him Hawaiian punch. Does he have to trumpet to the world that his ancestry is from the Phil (Ilocanos from the Ilocos region) when people who care to know, knew it? In write-ups and interviews, he never hid his Filipino ancestry. But you never knew it because to you, the only Fil boxers worth following are Pacquiao, Pacquiao and Pacquiao. Now, return to hating Mayweather

That was years ago, so how can you say the only Filipino boxers I followed was Pacquiao? get out of here with that crap you don't even read you completely went straight to commentating on my thread next time read before replying and use your brain so you don't look so emotional.

Hey genius. Read my post. Do Viloria need to trumpet himself being Filipino when people who need to know, already knew it? Idiot. Just by his looks and surname alone, you can say with certainty that he is of Fil decent. Do you still need him to say it? Use your brain and don't look so emotional.
