I don't think it's cheap at all since it is coming out of his pocket (20 million is around what Showtime pays for boxing). Now if it were NBC paying the money then it would be a grand slam for boxing.

It's almost like NBC are taking advantage of poor Al. For that money they should give him more then 4 NBC slots. The UFC has 4 slots a year on Fox and they get paid 100 million a year (which also includes all the stuff they put on FS1).

4 times on NBC won't capture the public imagination (it hasn't worked for the UFC), and the rest of stuff on NBC Sports will get lower ratings then Showtime cards since that channel is struggling.

Kathy Duva put on some great fights on NBC. Hopefully Haymon does the same.

They can tell when a fight goes two rounds and isn't competitive.

A 2 round main event may not do great ratings if people leave the station when it ends.

          Exactly.

It's what happens with a lot of these deals...UFC on FOX, Main Events on NBCSN, Top Rank on Versus, Don King on FOX years ago...the quality of match-ups goes down over time.

The quality goes down and then the ratings go down.

The other belts won't matter for his fighters at that point. It will be similar UFC in MMA, or WWE is wrestling. He wants access to the most number of viewers and the fighters records won't matter as much because they will always be fighting one another. They May even end up getting a yearly salary instead of being on a fight by fight basis

ARound the time of the Stevenson fiasco she said her main priority was getting Kovalev a deal on HBO. so this isn't surprising.

TV deals for a fighter are not primarily about making the best fights, especially when you have a situation like kovavlev or GGG-relatively cheap purses for good ratings.

The UFC and WWF took advantage of a landscape that simply doesn't exist now in boxing.

Boxing is too well established, there are too many promoters, too many en****** that have a stake.

Al Haymon can give his boxers title belts, but that doesn't make them legitimate.

Try explaining to a casual who wants to see an HBO fighter fight on network television that it will never happen because Haymon has only HIS fighters fighting on NBC. It'll be like wanting to see the Yankees play the redsox but because of behind the scene politics it will never happen. Boxing will not prosper as a whole until its governed like every other mainstream sport.
You hit the nail on the head, everything from casuals not understanding what's going on and Boxing needing to be governed like other sports. Couldn't have said it better myself.
