Branco has an above average defense and hasnt been knocked out ever in his career and Cotto still put a beating on him. I dont see where hes regressing either. I see Cotto as a fighter who fights to the level of his competition. He does what he needs to do to win.

Yeah but its not like its been great competiton. Its not neccesarily a bad thing if you say a guy fights to the level of his compition but thats only if he has fougth some great fighters and stepped it up.
Its not a great thing to say he fights to the level of his competion when they have all bee on a B or C level. It makes it look like if you arent dominant against those guys then you cant compete against the upper class guys
You've been here for awhile, and with every post I've pretty much seen you repeat the same thing over and over and over. "I Like Cotto, but he's getting worse and will lose" blah blah.
I don't understand how you can beef at all with this performance. Cotto was never some extremely elusive guy. He showed a tighter defense earlier on, and I think he showed a pretty good defense here...taking a lot of shots on his gloves and avoiding some hooks and such. I think he got back to what made him look so good earlier on against guys like Sosa, Bazan, Maussa, etc. He boxed with patience and picked his spots...mixing in that disgusting body attack that really discouraged Branco from letting his hands go.
Comparing Malignaggi/Cotto to Lacy/Calzaghe sounds a bit off base. Calzaghe has POWER, is a PROVEN champion, and gave the performance of a lifetime against a very dangerous guy. PM, for the time being, is a huge question mark in terms of how he'll deal with a guy who is potentially an elite fighter.
I agree with you about the whole post fight deal. If they are going to sell the fight, they should have let Malignaggi step in the ring and have some words with Cotto to market this thing. It could have an interesting back story with the whole young slick Italian American kid vs. the young PR boxer/puncher champion.
I have become a lot more realistic about Cotto's conquests in the future, and believe that his bigger moments will come at 147. I'd still like him in a bout with Hatton, he'd have a serious uphill climb with Floyd. I don't think that after 26 fights against really solid competition we can necessarily call him protected.
Also, what has Malignaggi done/shown/beaten that makes you think he could deal with Cotto? Or is it you think Cotto has taken this many steps backwards?
You said" You've been here for awhile, and with every post I've pretty much seen you repeat the same thing over and over and over. "I Like Cotto, but he's getting worse and will lose" blah blah.
So whats wrong with that? I think I am telling the truth. You dont think he has regressed from earlier in his career? Now I definatly think he looked better in this fight then his previous ones but alot of people said this guy was tailor made for Cotto and he would be out in 3 rounds, 4 tops.
I'll say this,I think cotto's big fight is over due.Ive thought for a while that he's just taking risks for no gain taking these type of fights. But I dont see how the Paulie fight is an improvement.Youll see cotto shine against top opposition, win or lose you'll see how great he his.
I'll give Pauile some credit although to this point I havent, like you said cotto got tagged tonight, and he'll probably get tagged with pauile, because he had to follow around bronco, and He'll have to follow along Paulie.Paulie has a chance,I guess to in a UD.But,i just see this as another one of this iffy, but ZERO REWARD fights. What does cotto gain from fighting Paulie? ****ing nothing. You cant tell me otherwise man.
So what would you think of cotto if he beat paulie DLT? Would you still have the same doubts you have in this post? I hope not, since your putting so much emphasis on Paulie.
I somewhat agree with what you said about Paulie but Im just different because of really liked that kid since the 1st time I saw him and I thought back then that he could be Gatti 2 years ago and would give Cotto a serious run. Now I definatly dont like him jumping straight to a Cotto fight before fighting another guy on a higher level but he is doing it and I think hes got the skills to beat him and thats no disrespect to Cotto. I just really like Paulie's style. I love boxers like him
i thought Cotto fought good last night, he wasn't taking any unnecessary risks and fought patient.
also i like the fact that he was hitting Branco on the arms, shoulders, on the gloves, anywhere he could land. he just let his hands go which makes it hard for his opponent to get any shots off.
Malignaggi is taking a huge step up in class and Paulie has the confidence in himself that he can win. i think differently. all Malignaggi has been fighting is C level club fighters who don't even have a fight plan going in against him.
Cotto has been fighting world class fighters over the last couple of years. he hits like a mack truck and applies pressure, not to mention he has a solid body attack, something Malignaggi has never had to face inside the ring.
i think that Cotto is going to break down Malignaggi over 10 rounds and get him out of there in the 11th.
Malignaggi is going to run and pot shot till he the body shots catch up to him. Malignaggi doesn't have the punch to keep Cotto off of him and is going to get walked down in this fight........
DLT > i agree with you dude ... there is something missing - cotto's lost the ability to put together those solid, heavy combos and elusive footwork that he displayed last year ... i don't know wtf it is, but yeah - he looked like a good fighter - but not that special fighter that i thought would own the entire 140 class.
he used to have some "sweetness" to his style - i don't see that anymore - i just see a truck trying to run over his opponents. you'll never beat an elite boxer with that style.

You cannot base his ability off of one fight, he was fighting a different style fighter that happened to include very good defence, not to mention very high trunks. I admit that Cotto looked different in that fight, but he just fought that fight differently. Cotto is actually a smart fighter and a SLOW STARTER. DLT sais, "Cotto goes in and tries to KO his opponent immediately"- this is a lie, he does not do this at all. Cotto is a smart fighter that paces himself to fight 12 rounds if he needs to, without compromising strength or quickness. Cotto won every round and stopped a fighter that almost beat a prime Gatti.
I used to be a great fan of Cotto but now I'm just a fan. Why is he going to fight Paul. I rather he fight mighty mike than Paul Mali...?
When is he going to get a defining fight.
Last night one thing I saw about Cotto is that he has no defense for the left hand to the head. He got caught last night with one or two and it seems he doen't know how to avoid it.
