This fight can technically pass for Pac's mandatory since Chris is the WBO titleholder in the division below.

With all the BS going on in boxing, there not much else to be made.

The only thing killing Chris is his name value, of which he has none. He dug deep in the Provodnikov fight. He might be really good, we don't know yet. Does that prospect merit a fight off of the assumption, no.

Honestly, was Maidana the most legit opponent for Floyd the first time around? Take out the Broner fight, and tell me what he did (recently AND at 147) to earn a Floyd shot.

Now put the Broner fight back on Maidana's resume...same situation. The opponents were in the right place at the right time with one good current win.

It shouldn't be on PPV, along with just about every other fight that is on PPV, but hundreds of thousands of people keep buying them. The fans dictate the PPV market, so we have ourselves to blame for having to pay for this.

Could someone put up a list of available guys? I really don't know that area too well. Matthysse would have been a nice matchup, he's a Haymon guy I'm guessing?

He's fighting a top five junior welter on PPV. This should be a stay busy, HBO Championship boxing fight. Further, Algieri is a major underdog who is in over his head here. It's just a mediocre fight across the board and the PPV #'s will reflect that.

It's a good fight. Algieri is fresh blood, someone new, an undefeated title holder ...
... What's bad about Danny Garcia vs Rod Salka?
... What's bad about Floyd vs pillows?
... What's bad about Ward sitting back?

          ... There's nothing bad.

Maidana started between 135 and 140, floyd at 130

At 140 and 147 you cant compare algieris ledger with theirs

Maidana vs pacquaio is a better fight than that....maidana has proven himself on several occasions

Why bring up broner hell even he is a better opponent than algieri and more proven he and provo

Beating provodnikov isn't enough. 6 weeks ago, nobody knew who he was. now he fights pacquaio. this fight is a disgrace. I cant think of one instance where a guy fights on premium cable 1 time and gets a ppv fight with the network's most popular fighter

Can't get excited for this fight. Don't really like algeris style and also think he will easily get beaten

And Algeiri comes to fight so it'll be entertaining unlike Canelo Lara
WTF? This is the weirdest reason that someone has used for justifying a PPV fight. You want to help pay for his studies?

What's wrong with Hooks paying for someone's education?

Algieri is fresh blood, someone new, an undefeated title holder coming off a big win and his 5'10 frame, long reach and awkward style will give problems to Pacquiao. I'd rather see a fight like this than another recycled Top Rank fight like Marquez 400 or Timothy Bradley 3. The only real problem is this probably isn't PPV worthy since Algieri is little known. It would be a great HBO regular main event fight, but obviously HBO can't pay $20m purses and Pac/Top Rank aren't going to fight for $3-$5m or whatever HBO could afford.

Algieri is tall and lean, so he'll have a considerable height & reach advantage over Pacquiao. He is a boxer who uses movement, counter punching and a good jab. He can take a punch as shown by fighting Ruslan and winning a decision over 12 (with a badly swollen eye). I expect Algieri to give Pacquiao a lot of problems. Stylistically, this is a tough match up for an aging Pacquiao to handle (unless he suddenly looks like Pacquiao from 2009).

Of course there are bigger and better names, but who is really available? Lets look:

                      147
                      Mayweather (fighting Maidana/Showtime/Haymon)
                      Bradley (just fought)
Marquez (already fought 50 times, JMM turned down or wanted 50/50)
                      Maidana (fighting Floyd, Al Haymon/Showtime)
                      Keith Thurman/Porter (Al Haymon/Showtime)

                      140
Danny Garcia (Fighting Ron Salsa, Al Haymon/Showtime)
                      Matthysse (Al Haymon/Showtime)
Lamont Peterson (fighting Carlos Santana, Al Haymon/Showtime)

                      That leaves:
Algieri, Ruslan and Mike Alvarado, the last two just got beat.

The one name I'm not sure about is Amir Khan. I know he signed with Al Haymon but there is confusion on my part wether or not he has a contract with Golden Boy (if anyone knows please drop some knowledge). That was the fight Bob Arum and Roach were talking about, but something got in the way it seems. To me, that was the best realistic fight I thought could have happened but I guess not.

So there you have it. A solid match up on paper, not quite PPV worthy but a good fight nonetheless.
It would be refreshing if this kind of reasoned boxing based analysis was done for every fight and fighter. Sadly posters only attempt this when the reputation of a fighter they like is at stake.

The fight is bad for all the reasons listed by posters in this and other threads regarding this fight. It's ridiculous to resist all of them. To try and justify this fight over any other fight that opens 14-1 that you usually skewer wreaks of bias even though you have made good points.

You would never accept this type of fight for other highly ranked p4p fighters given these or in other circumstances. I expect same here.
